I doubt Noctis and Luna will have a Squall and Rinoa kind of relationship. It seems they've been engaged since they were kids, or at least known each other since they were kids, and Luna seems to be a far different character from Rinoa. They both seem far too serious for a silly romance.

Besides, the game is going to be about the four guys and explore the theme of "brotherhood". And people are speculating that Luna will die, anyway, so you probably won't have to worry about a schmoopy FF romance.

I have very little trust in them when it comes to romances, I'll admit. But it remains to be seen.

What's your story with FF romances, btw? I know you mentioned Squall and Rinoa, and I remember really disliking that as well, but there's been some good FF romances as well, so... what's the trauma?

It's probably a mix of canon romances and fanon annoyance - FFVII had that whole "Aeris vs. Tifa" fandom war. And while Tidus and Yuna were cute, they were kinda boring to me. FFVI was alright, I guess.
My main problem really was Rinoa and Squall. FFVIII was my first Final Fantasy so I'm still kind of fond of it but damn, looking back and having replayed it recently, that romance is pretty creepy and fucked up.

If it makes you feel better, I doubt any romance will ever be as bad as Squall/Rinoa? It's really a shame that VIII was your first FF. I had the good fortune to play VI first, so Squall/Rinoa never had the chance to ruin FF romance forever for me. And I've actively stayed away from any serious shipping in fandom. Fandom and shipping has ruined many things.

I'm really interested to see what Noctis and Luna will be like, actually. After what little I've seen, I kinda imagine they'll be a bit like what Ashe and Rasler would have been like if we'd got to see more of them, for some reason.

Yeah, I guess Squall/Rinoa is hard to beat - that's a relief. I actually liked FFVIII (apart from the romance)- but I'm still not entirely sure if I still like it because I honestly like it or because my nostlagia goggles are too tight haha!

Yeah, that might be true. I guess we can do nothing but wait and see when the game is out!

I liked FFVIII as well, but that romance kinda over shadowed everything. I came out of it pretending that Rinoa and Squall would break up after the game and Rinoa would get back together with Seifer after he'd snapped out of the whole sorceress' knight thing. They sure seemed to like each other a lot until Rinoa thought he'd been executed and decided to go after Squall instead.

Yeah, I agree with the breaking up part. It just seemed way too forced. No sure about Rinoa and Seifer - they do deserve each other, kinda.

Rinoa and Squall is genuinely one of the worst written romances I've ever come across in any media ever. I love the game but when I reply I always get to the start of disc 3 and get too mad to continue. It's just so incredibly bad. The only thing that can get me through is the theory that Rinoa (unintentionally) made Squall fall in love with her with her newly-acquired sorceress powers. It's the only sensible explanation for the complete 180 in Squall's feelings and actions.

VII is fine though. There's no actual (reciprocated) romance in the game. It seems a shame to let the fandom ruin that.

Yeah, it was as if by changing the discs, you also exchanged Squall for a completely different person. He went "Fuck, that chick is annoying I don't want anything to do with her" to "OMG I NEED TO HEAR HER VOICE RINOAAAAA I WUV YOU" in the blink of an eye and it was just plain weird. I agree that an unintentional "you're my Sorcerer's knight and in love with me now" would explain it - it was always the only reason I could think of for this complete change of heart.
(The way everyone tried to set them up together and kept pressuring Squall into dating Rinoa already was pretty skeevy as well though.)

Yeah, the actual game canon for VII is pretty romance free. I just think that all the people who insist Cloud and Aeris are totally in love (or something) are missing the huge elephant in the room that is "Cloud thinks he's Zack for a big part of the game" - which makes a Cloud/Aeris pairing kind of creepy as well.

I've heard a lot of people justify it by saying that he didn't realise his feelings until he was faced with the possibility of losing her, but that doesn't make a lick of sense considering shortly before they go to fight Edea he left her hanging from the side of the Garden during a massive battle for like half an hour because he had more important stuff to do.

Honestly for the first two discs you could make a better argument that Squall has feelings for Zell than you can for Rinoa.

And yeah, it's skeevy the way everyone keeps pushing him to like her. Yeah, a relationship might be good for him, but it's not their place to constantly pressure him in to it.

As for FFVII, I agree, but just one super pedantic point: I don't think Cloud ever thought he was Zack, exactly. He just confused some of his life experiences for Zack's, which basically means he thought he was a lot cooler and more successful than he actually was. He thought he was the kind of person he wanted to be, which made him cocky and more self-confident, but otherwise he was largely the same person throughout the game (except when he was insane, of course). I think people tend to massively overstate how much of disc 1 Cloud was "fake".
