The case for both is equally weak, insofar as both statements are objectively wrong

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

I know a few guys who wrote fanfic, mostly gen or humor, who actually produced some solidly fun stories.

Yeah. There are also some less fortunate ones where guys are producing horrible fic, but still, it counts.

Also I am a guy who likes fic. Don't write it though.

I have seen my brother's FFN account. He doesn't write, but like me has a substantial Favourites list. It pretty-much fits what you say.

I've met several guys in fandom. There are those who create slash fanworks, mostly gay men. Then there are straight guys who drew het/gen, while their girlfriend does all that and also does slash.

Then there are those straight guys who like to write slash now and then, among other things (het, gen and f/f) as a kind of literary experiment. They're probably the rarest and a testament to how society is relaxing about sexuality these days, which I think is fantastic. I imagine they're more attracted by the freedom that fanfic brings and the community around it than the specific subject matter.

Fandom is mostly women, but it's definitely not completely so.

There's a huge trans presence as well, and I can see why. Both the anonymity of the internet and the creative process itself gives huge freedom to try on various gender roles.

trans ... try on various gender roles
Uhh I think you have it around the wrong way. Being trans isn't a choice nor does it spring from anonymity and creativity... but being marginal socially might lead to those.

Fanfic is a small slice of fandom, and for a lot of the rest you can't swing a stick without hitting a fanboy.

Which is why it's just so precious that the first movie about fanfic is about ...a dude.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Well, not exactly. There are different levels of objectively wrong. Look:

1) It's wrong to sucker punch an adult.
2) It's wrong to sucker punch a baby.

Both are wrong. But one of them is a little more wrong...

Those are moral claims, not arguments regarding fact
