Learning Spanish

[personal profile] philstar22 2015-09-30 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I want/need to start learning Spanish. I took a bunch in high school, but about the only thing I remember is conjucation.

The original plan was to take classes. But on-on-one tutoring is too expensive, and group classes around here require a certain amount of base knowledge.

So I'm going to buy some books/cds and try to learn on my own. But I'm not sure the best method.

One site recommended buying the three Barron's foreign language guide books as well as the Easy Spanish step-by-step workbook.

Is that the way to go? Rosetta stone is a bit out of my price range too.

Do you have a community college anywhere near? The cost is usually much more reasonable than private tutoring and they should have beginner's Spanish, too.

The only community college nearby doesn't have a fall term. They wouldn't start until November. And the class would end up being a couple hundred as well.

I second this. It's super helpful, and there are achievements!

Thirding Duolingo! It's basically Rosetta Stone but online and free.

Do people draw the line at pirating for educational materials? Or are you against pirating altogether?

I should disclaim that all the Rosetta Stone torrents take some work to get running (and you need to disable your laptop/computer's internet whenever they start up so you can't be caught) but it works like a charm.

That being said, RS is horrible when it comes to grammar. You'll need flashcards and written notes for that.

I have a mac, and I haven't found a Rosetta Stone torrent that works for macs. But my mother just found a Latin American conversational Spanish audio course, so I'm going to try that one since that's more what I need anyway.

watch some Spanish soap operas on youtube. this is a OK way to get some practice.

^^This, but as a supplement to instruction. Watching native Spanish shows (not dubbed) was strongly advised by my Spanish teacher in college. I couldn't pick out but a few random words from time to time, but something about hearing the language as it's meant to be spoken (not in an instructional setting) is helpful.

Thirding this.

And if you aren't into soap operas, there's surprisingly a good variety of movies of different genres so you can try that too.

And maybe check series produced for International audiences? Those sometimes have the advantage that are spoken in a Spanish more clear than the one used in other local productions.

I would also check out Spanish music. It has helped me a lot when it comes to my French at least.

Also

I had a friend who learned a lot of vocab by watching Spanish wrestling and cooking shows. Loaded with vocabulary with visuals to go with!

Do you have a card with your local library? They probably subscribe to something. My library offers a service called Mango which offers instruction in Spanish as spoken in both Spain and Latin America.
