Question. They released a 'sampler' DVD for Steven Universe. And the episodes were cute and watchable. If they release a complete first season disc, would it be worthwhile getting? At what point does the show start getting preachy or 'message-y' (based on the comments from around here, that would seem to be an issue.)

Later episodes get really heavy on the depression/every character crying about one thing or another. Then there's the sort of creepy thing between Pearl and Steven, where she watches him sleep and thinks his mother, who she's in love with, might be able to see her through his eyes, and yeah. There's still some cute stuff, but not as much.

imo i think it's worth it. And for what it's worth, i wouldn't say it's necessarily "preachy" or "message-y". mostly, the variety of characters and generally feminist themes of the show can make it a fan favorite around a certain type of crowd (which can be annoying, i'll definitely grant you that). Doesn't mean the show isn't good or worth watching, even the later episodes.

If you like the episodes you have watched so far, i think you would like the rest of the show. It does get a little more dramatic and serious over time, but still has its lighthearted moments. The last bunch of episodes have been ridiculously enjoyable for me, anyway.

frankly i'm not quite sure why some parts of FS seem to be having kind of a hateboner for this show? the style might take a while to get used to, but it's been a while since i enjoyed a cartoon this much.

I don't get it either. Maybe Steven Universe is so good that it's crossed that threshold where a bunch of people feel like they have to take it down a peg. Maybe it has something to do with the online fans of the show, although I don't run in those circles.

I guess the backlash is because it's popular at the moment. So the people who don't care for the show, still get exposed to it, which I guess is grating to some people. Plus, the show is, how should I put this, socially progressive enough to attract SJ types, some of whom can unfortunately be asinine enough to give a bad association to the social justice movement (and also to stuff they're fans of).

It's kinda silly because SU has a major theme of human imperfection, and how everyone has flaws and makes mistakes or ends up doing bad things sometimes, and this doesn't mean the person is entirely terrible and irredeemable. But a significant enough to be noticeable segment of the fandom are these types of SJWs who are strong believers of the "problematic culture", as in, if someone does something problematic, that means they're tainted forever.

So a lot of time we get like... episodes where a character does something inconsiderate or hurtful, often with good intentions or just plain without thinking or understanding how it affects someone else, and it's generally portrayed as understandable (if not "justified"). And then a segment of the fandom will inevitably label this character as "abusive" and "toxic".

Also, while SU has a lot of qualities that make it a favourite for many people involved with the social justice movement, I wouldn't really describe it as "preachy". SU doesn't really do Very Special Episodes where someone soapboxes about the acceptance of [insert minority group here] or whatever (okay, I guess you could technically argue that about the Stronger Than You sequence, but it was also awesome so I'm not exactly complaining). It's more organically integrated as just... aspects of the setting and the characters. Like, characters have various different ethnicities or body types or sexual/romantic orientations etc, and the writing generally tries to avoid basing characters on clichéd gender roles, but. Like. That's how people are in the real world, too. I don't think just featuring that as a normalized setting is automatically "preachy".

so hurting people is justified now? Wow, not that I disagree that humans beings are capable of hurting others without realising it, but "justified"??

There was the word "not" written right before the word "justified"...? In retrospect, I could've written "although not" instead of "if not", but that sentence was already getting overly long, and I'm ESL and can't always immediately come up with the best possible words to use, and to me it looked like the context and the quotation marks would make the point clear anyway.

I mean, maybe there's some mysterious unnoticed double negative going on in that sentence that I'm not noticing that changes the meaning, or I'm writing something wrong sort of like when people mistakenly say "could care less" when they mean "couldn't care less"? Sorry if that was confusing.

The preachiness of the show is mostly from the fact that it's fans overanalyse everything about every episode that comes out, with weekly episodes they have time to search out and make gifsets out of every little detail. I don't think there's much to worry about really.

The show is not perfect and it's fine to criticize it, but you should keep in mind that some o the hate it gets is just hype backlash, especially because lately something being liked on tumblr is enough to be disliked everywhere else.

As for the episodes, I decided to stick around when I realized they were willing to explore some interesting stuff with characters like Amethyst, but Lion 3 and Ocean Gem also set the tone for what people like in the show.

The only episode that really pushes the message is Historical Friction. The rest of the time, the messages are comparatively subtle for a kids' cartoon (and WAY more subtle than the messages in MLP.) Fans just like to talk about the messages because they're often not messages you see in cartoons very often.

The people who think SU is 'preachy' or 'message-y' seem to be the sort of people who get up in arms over video games with female leads for being 'political.' It's just overanalysis. If you liked what you saw, odds are you'll like the rest of it.
