Reverse Beauty & Beast

(Anonymous) 2015-10-02 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Do you know any story where an ugly girl gets the hot boy?

And by ugly I mean actually ugly and not hollywood ugly or "she was beautiful all along, she just needed new hairstyle and clothes and contact lenses".

idk how much this counts... but the main character in Trainwreck was definitely a trainwreck. very much the female equivalent of Homer Simpson or Charlie Sheen or something. and definitely not Hollywood beautiful.

The most obvious examples I can think of are from British T.V., namely My Mad Fat Diary, The Vicar of Dibley, and Miranda.

This is a bad example, but it's hard enough to think of media with women who are not skinny and still main love interests. I thought of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, because she's a little bigger, and looks rather older and not as pretty... but don't get me wrong, I still think she is pretty, just not Hollywood pretty. The guy she gets with is more conventionally attractive.

Yes, that is a bad example. You pretty much gave the anon what they specifically did NOT want.

Since it's rare enough to find a mainstream movie with a female romantic lead who is heavier, and not beautiful, and gets with a very attractive guy, I think it's worth a mention. Fact of the matter is, what OP is looking for hardly exists.

Depends. Does a four-foot-nine hunchback count as a hot boy? ("Labyrinth" by Lois McMaster Bujold.)

I'll let you know if GRRM ever finishes A Song of Ice and Fire.

North & South (mini-series 2004) maybe. I mean, Armitage.

Penelope (2006) has this storyline, though they didn't make the girl especially unattractive imho.

In what universe is that actress ugly??

Both of those are terrible examples.

I don't know any that haven't already been said, but I also hate it when movies take pretty actresses, make them frizzy and plain looking with makeup and then make them over to look... like themselves.

Yes. I am so shocked they were conventionally attractive all along. :|

yeah, I hate that too. Those movies are just very long commercials for makeup and getting your hair done. (and contact lenses, usually.)

Perhaps "A Spell for Chameleon", the first Xanth novel by Piers Anthony?

I thought this was basically Twilight?

Except Bella is beautiful. She doesn't think so, she thinks she's plain and average, but all of the boys at school want her, even the werewolves, and when she's turned into a vampire, she is the most amazingly stunning beautiful beautiful vampire girl everrrrrr.

I think that disqualifies her.

lol k. That makes more sense on a Mary Sue level anyway. I have never read that shit or seen any movies so I was just going off of fandom osmosis.

Yeah, Kristin Stewart is so ugly.

God I hate it when Beauty and the Beast is reduced to "Ugly Monster Guy Gets the Girl". That's not what it is about ffs!
