this is why i suspect that the concepts of cultural appropriation and queerbaiting respectively are dangerous terrain because they lead to a sort of essentialism out of a defensive reflex. nobody wants to be accused of it, so better not do/say/like anything gay if you're straight, or somehow colored with a culture you're not part of. and best point out all the people who aren't as careful as you about it and call them out to be safe so people will know you're on the "right side".

idk. back when i was a young lesbian in the late 90s i was super happy about queer stuff, made by, and even aimed at straight people, and subtext even more, because I felt that I knew more than the hetero people, while they often didn't get it.
