As far as MCU fandom goes: that Captain America is a lefty.

[personal profile] chardmonster 2015-10-02 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
On account of having grown up during the Great Depression in New York City.

If you know anything about either the Great Depression or New York City you will see why this is laughable. It also carries with it the impression that you have to be basically Bernie Sanders in red white and blue spandex to not be a racist homophobe.

Please keep in mind, I'm not saying lefty as in "doesn't vote GOP" I'm saying people are implying that Cap must be a socialist full stop.

I also have no problem with the headcanon, just this incredibly spurious basis for it. I prefer Cap more ambiguous but you do you. As long as you don't turn him into Frank Miller Batman I'm happy.

Jesus Christ, I actually read through half of this trying to figure out what the hell growing up in NY during the Great Depression had to do with being left-handed.

I are dumb sometiems.

...I did the exact same thing, because all I could think about were some of the weird old timey standards where they made lefties only write with their right.

Yep. That happened to my grandmother, who was born in 1909.

I was wondering what politics had to do with being left-handed myself...

So did I.

I am a political "lefty," and I wondered this too.

I'm sick of tumblr glorifying communism. Um, what do they think happened all those times before?

It does? Or do you mean democratic socialism?

nayrt

(Anonymous) 2015-10-03 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
they're probably all the same according to the anon you replied to.

Re: nayrt

(Anonymous) 2015-10-03 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Um, no. I've seen plenty of tumblrs actively talking about communism. Like, literally communism, not socialism.

...socialism is not communism.

I know that socialism is not communism. I just linked up the whole "tumblr doesn't understand social/economic systems" with communism as well.

Now I'm wondering if Cap would be a Libertarian. He's often positioned as a supporter of individual freedom and striving to be the best you can be.

Re: As far as MCU fandom goes: that Captain America is a lefty.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-02 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Libertarians are the worst. I hate listening to them talk. I don't even necessarily disagree, but they're just the worst.

He might be a libertarian in terms of value, though I doubt he'd get along well with the Libertarian Party.

(I don't think that's a super uncommon combination, either.)

Re: As far as MCU fandom goes: that Captain America is a lefty.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-03 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Civil libertarian, gay rights & such, sure. But Cap is a New Dealer and a recipient of government largesse. The Libertarian Party would probably hate him.

Re: As far as MCU fandom goes: that Captain America is a lefty.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-02 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought you meant left-handed, and was wondering how I managed to miss that.

I like him flexible, politically. I don't *get* political extremism myself, and maybe that's part of it. I could see him being in favour of some of the social reforms, as well as healthcare, but he was also very proud of being able to make it on his own. But as long as he's willing to debate things reasonably, I'm okay with him.

Re: As far as MCU fandom goes: that Captain America is a lefty.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-03 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
"Make it on his own"? He's a government-developed super-soldier, in, oh, pretty much every version.

Re: As far as MCU fandom goes: that Captain America is a lefty.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-03 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
I meant more in terms of him turning down Bucky's offer of a shoulder to cry on when his mother died in TWS, or his insistence in starting fights that he couldn't finish and being too proud to admit he'd bitten off more than he could chew. That 'never say die/never back down' attitude that *got* him the serum. Sorry, I should have been more specific.

Re: As far as MCU fandom goes: that Captain America is a lefty.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-03 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's stronger than that. The comic-book version of Cap was repeatedly written by Jewish New Yorkers with liberal Democratic Party affiliations, and tends to be explicitly a New Deal Democrat. Mark Gruenwald was explicit that he made John Walker a rural conservative for contrast.

Now, the "red diaper baby" fan speculation about Steve has probably been jossed, but comic Steve is left of center.

Translating that to the movies, where he's leading multi-racial Howling Commandos, is pretty easy.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-03 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Shhhh. Don't bring out the logic.

Re: As far as MCU fandom goes: that Captain America is a lefty.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-03 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Canonically, Cap is a New Deal Democrat and a big proponent of equality and respect for everyone. These days, that'd mean getting called a socialist.

What I don't like is the idea "Oh, Cap is a lefty, therefore he FEELS EXACTLY LIKE I DO ABOUT EVERY ISSUE ON MY TUMBLR DASH."

Re: As far as MCU fandom goes: that Captain America is a lefty.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-03 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
The motherfucker was an Irish kid from Manhattan, he would have voted for FDR 20 times over (just like he would have been a Giants fan twenty times over) (goddamn JJ Abrams with your Hollywood Dodgers bullshit). Now obviously that doesn't translate into being fully onboard with the modern progressive agenda.

On the other hand, Cap is a character who is in a lot of ways defined by his fundamental moral goodness & compassion, and who is in a lot of ways identical with The American Dream. So I don't think it's at all out of bounds for the character to imagine that he would sign on to a lot of those planks very quickly, if your politics lean that way.

Because at the end of the day, Cap's not real, and his politics aren't those of any real person. He's the representation of what the United States ought to be, of our best self, and if that means that he signs onto the idea of racial equality and women's liberation and gay rights unrealistically quickly, I'm completely okay with that. Historical realism is just not the correct frame through which to understand Cap IMO.
