What is the absolute WORST fandom-wide headcanon?

That Thor is obsessed with them. Because he mentioned them once in the first movie.

Anyone's headcanon about Sister Abigail that's not like my headcanon. Especially any about her being young, still alive or a love interest of Bray Wyatt. I still don't understand why I get so up in arms about her portrayal but it's like my main instant-rage issue in wrestling. I'm sorry.

As far as MCU fandom goes: that Captain America is a lefty.

[personal profile] chardmonster 2015-10-02 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
On account of having grown up during the Great Depression in New York City.

If you know anything about either the Great Depression or New York City you will see why this is laughable. It also carries with it the impression that you have to be basically Bernie Sanders in red white and blue spandex to not be a racist homophobe.

Please keep in mind, I'm not saying lefty as in "doesn't vote GOP" I'm saying people are implying that Cap must be a socialist full stop.

I also have no problem with the headcanon, just this incredibly spurious basis for it. I prefer Cap more ambiguous but you do you. As long as you don't turn him into Frank Miller Batman I'm happy.

Jesus Christ, I actually read through half of this trying to figure out what the hell growing up in NY during the Great Depression had to do with being left-handed.

I are dumb sometiems.

Now I'm wondering if Cap would be a Libertarian. He's often positioned as a supporter of individual freedom and striving to be the best you can be.

Re: As far as MCU fandom goes: that Captain America is a lefty.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-02 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought you meant left-handed, and was wondering how I managed to miss that.

I like him flexible, politically. I don't *get* political extremism myself, and maybe that's part of it. I could see him being in favour of some of the social reforms, as well as healthcare, but he was also very proud of being able to make it on his own. But as long as he's willing to debate things reasonably, I'm okay with him.

Re: As far as MCU fandom goes: that Captain America is a lefty.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-03 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's stronger than that. The comic-book version of Cap was repeatedly written by Jewish New Yorkers with liberal Democratic Party affiliations, and tends to be explicitly a New Deal Democrat. Mark Gruenwald was explicit that he made John Walker a rural conservative for contrast.

Now, the "red diaper baby" fan speculation about Steve has probably been jossed, but comic Steve is left of center.

Translating that to the movies, where he's leading multi-racial Howling Commandos, is pretty easy.

Re: As far as MCU fandom goes: that Captain America is a lefty.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-03 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Canonically, Cap is a New Deal Democrat and a big proponent of equality and respect for everyone. These days, that'd mean getting called a socialist.

What I don't like is the idea "Oh, Cap is a lefty, therefore he FEELS EXACTLY LIKE I DO ABOUT EVERY ISSUE ON MY TUMBLR DASH."

Re: As far as MCU fandom goes: that Captain America is a lefty.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-03 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
The motherfucker was an Irish kid from Manhattan, he would have voted for FDR 20 times over (just like he would have been a Giants fan twenty times over) (goddamn JJ Abrams with your Hollywood Dodgers bullshit). Now obviously that doesn't translate into being fully onboard with the modern progressive agenda.

On the other hand, Cap is a character who is in a lot of ways defined by his fundamental moral goodness & compassion, and who is in a lot of ways identical with The American Dream. So I don't think it's at all out of bounds for the character to imagine that he would sign on to a lot of those planks very quickly, if your politics lean that way.

Because at the end of the day, Cap's not real, and his politics aren't those of any real person. He's the representation of what the United States ought to be, of our best self, and if that means that he signs onto the idea of racial equality and women's liberation and gay rights unrealistically quickly, I'm completely okay with that. Historical realism is just not the correct frame through which to understand Cap IMO.

I do rather dislike the Thor and poptarts theme. Poptarts are disgusting.

Re: What is the absolute WORST fandom-wide headcanon?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-02 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Thor didn't even say he liked them, Darcy just said he ate them. I've done that before, when I'm hungry and don't feel like making real food.

I do like poptarts, though, but there is a line between 'like' and 'worship'.

MCU specific, though what I've seen of 616 it applies there too.

That Tony Stark will work himself into complete collapse due to not eating and not sleeping. The guy is an *adult*. He's been an adult for over two decades. I'm sure he's managed to figure out that humans aren't capable of photosynthesis by now.

Also, that his workshop is a disaster zone. It looks excessively neat for a mechanic, in my opinion, and very, very clean (sterility-wise).

Your first point: See every single fandom with a "genius" character. Sherlock, House, Criminal Minds (sometimes), and Teen Wolf. Sometimes also Supernatural which whichever stupid woobie you choose.

It doesn't even make sense in the reboot! No one who's that big of an idiot could do a four year university program in three. Which he canonically did. *huffs and pouts over terrible fanon!Kirks*

I know nothing about comics, not do I care, but as far as movie verse Bucky?

Hydra seemed to care only about having a well tunned weapon.
I have a really hard time believing they feed him Russian philosophy and literature, or that they convinced about how great communism is, never mind giving him a great knowledge about Russian dishes.

Coming to this so late, but.....

That any of Hydra had the time or motivation to a) torture Bucky between assassinations and b) to rape and abuse him repeatedly. He almost killed a doctor/scientist in CA:TWS, even though once was a flashback. He's shown to be docile to orders *but*, if he's out too long/getting a little twitchy, he's *violent* and the security around him had guns, not tazers. It's pretty obvious they can't actually handle him all that well *or* stop him if he goes off, and I'm pretty sure they mostly just stuck him in cryo and hoped he'd be more-or-less stable and docile when they got him out the next time.
