'Kay I've got a stupid question. Not all phone #'s are cell phones of course. You've got landline #'s, fax #'s, that sort. So what happens if you text a # that is a landline or fax? Do you get an error or just nothing so you don't realize you have a wrong #?

expansive text to landline computer voice over.

I don't know about fax, but in my experience a landline will do something called 'text to landline', where that annoying voice that tells you to put a one in front of a long distance number or that the number you've dialed can't be reached actually *reads* the text to you, beginning with the name/number of the sender and the time sent. Which is kinda hilarious when she tries to read text speak. Not so fun when your brother-in-law keeps sending them while you're trying to take a bath, and you're the emergency contact for *all* the elderly relative and *have* to answer the phone.

I've heard the same thing as the anon above me for some phones.

Then others nothing seems to happen. At all. It's weird.

I think if I do it I just get a message on my phone saying it didn't work. I'd expect with some phones nothing would happen at all, but idk.

Real answer

Same message you get if you text a phone number that is not in service, which varies between service providers but is usually long the lines of: This message was not delivered, Undeliverable message, Message error: not delivered. etc.

Source: worked in an AT&T wireless call center for a year and a half when I was much younger.
