(Anonymous) 2015-10-03 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)TBH I think a lot of the criticisms people have of the book are intentional. The wizarding world isn't a happy bubbly fantasy world. I was re-reading GoF and that's very much emphasized - they ignore a murder (the Frank guy Harry dreams about) because the victim was a muggle, Fudge is suspicious of Madame Maxime because she's part giant, Arthur doesn't have money because he likes muggles... it goes on. The trouble is that because we see the books through Harry's eyes, and Harry's a little bit distracted, we don't get a complete overview of the layers. But they're there.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-03 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)Like, how does wizard morality work? Well it's kind of hard to figure out because magic isn't real and so it's outside of our normal toolbox to figure out a lot of things. Like, is it just to guard evil wizards with literal manifestations of depression and despair if that's the only way to prevent them from using their magic powers to escape? Well, how the hell should I know?
