I don't know, I don't think anyone deserves to be in Azkaban. The place is so incredibly fucked up no just penitentiary system could sanction its existence.

Honestly, things like this are why I never engage in HP-related ethical discussions. So many parts of the story are questionable in so many ways that there's never a good answer to any ethical in-universe question.

This is a good opinion I basically agree with

I think they made it a bit of a point that it wasn't a good idea for the Ministry to use Dementors.

I mean when the Dementors sided with Voldemort and crew, Dumbledore was pretty much like "I don't know what else you expected" to Fudge, practically.

Yeah, and JKR's said in interviews Kingsley got rid of them once he became Minister - YMMV on whether or not you consider interviews canon, but at the very least they were meant to be screwed up.

TBH I think a lot of the criticisms people have of the book are intentional. The wizarding world isn't a happy bubbly fantasy world. I was re-reading GoF and that's very much emphasized - they ignore a murder (the Frank guy Harry dreams about) because the victim was a muggle, Fudge is suspicious of Madame Maxime because she's part giant, Arthur doesn't have money because he likes muggles... it goes on. The trouble is that because we see the books through Harry's eyes, and Harry's a little bit distracted, we don't get a complete overview of the layers. But they're there.

Yah I think this is very true especially for book 3 and after, as the book leaves behind the specificity of the Edwardian school story pastiche it starts as and becomes more of a general fantasy-world type thing.

Yes, that's true! I'm not necessarily saying the books justify what's going on. Rather, I mean that the sheer amount of messed up things going on within the narrative essentially make many ethical questions unanswerable (unless one decides to accept that most main characters are evil).

There's also an element of the thing - fairly common in stuff like fantasy, science fiction, superhero stories, etc - where a ton of the ethical norms that we use aren't really useful precisely because a lot of the ways in which the world operates is totally different.

Like, how does wizard morality work? Well it's kind of hard to figure out because magic isn't real and so it's outside of our normal toolbox to figure out a lot of things. Like, is it just to guard evil wizards with literal manifestations of depression and despair if that's the only way to prevent them from using their magic powers to escape? Well, how the hell should I know?

Umbridge might deserve it.
