I don't know, I don't think anyone deserves to be in Azkaban. The place is so incredibly fucked up no just penitentiary system could sanction its existence.

Honestly, things like this are why I never engage in HP-related ethical discussions. So many parts of the story are questionable in so many ways that there's never a good answer to any ethical in-universe question.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-03 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a good opinion I basically agree with

(Anonymous) 2015-10-03 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they made it a bit of a point that it wasn't a good idea for the Ministry to use Dementors.

I mean when the Dementors sided with Voldemort and crew, Dumbledore was pretty much like "I don't know what else you expected" to Fudge, practically.

Umbridge might deserve it.

snape "won" in the books anyway. snape got the tragic past and was mostly redeemed at the end. sirius was shown as a thoughtless bully and then an emotionally stunted depressive who died a rather lame death.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-04 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
Nah. Both "won" (if you really insist on pitting early deaths against each other). Both are hugely popular characters and considered nuanced and problematic (IMO Snape more than Sirius).

Very OT and beside the point, but wasn't this one of the first real PoA pictures released? (From filming, I mean. I'm not counting pictures of the cast and such.) I remember squeeing so hard. And then PoA sucked.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-03 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
PoA was the best movie

like, it was legitimately the best Harry Potter movie and I don't think it's even close, I don't even know what other movie you would argue for

Yeah, I don't get why PoA is often lauded as being THE BEST, coming from the standpoint of someone who read the books, they really ruined a lot of the story in that movie. And, Hermione is a favorite of mine, but even I watched that movie and was like, WTF STOP TAKING THE GOOD THINGS HARRY AND RON DID AND GIVING THEM ALL TO HERMIONE. Or just erasing them altogether. :(

TBH, when this came up back in my days on various Harry Potter themed journal comms, it did make a kind of sense that negligently and with malice aforethought, exposing someone else to a dangerous situation ought to carry some kind of punishment.

Given the political realities Dumbledore faced though, I can see why he took the unpalatable route of hushing the whole thing up at the cost of giving Snape any sense of justice he might have served, but on the other hand not working too hard to give Sirius a trial might've been his cryptic-as-hell way of backhandedly offering Snape what he wanted.

That said I wouldn't have let it drag out for twelve years... :\

(Anonymous) 2015-10-03 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
not to mention making a huge hullabaloo out of it might have outed remus. there were bigger things going on than punishing sirius or soothing snapey's fee-fees.

Yeah, this, absolutely. Not even Bellatrix and Barty Crouch deserved to be thrown to the Dementors, and what they did was a lot worse than what Sirius did, nasty and culpable though that was.

Life imprisonment for attempted murder seems like an unfairly retributive punishment that wouldn't accomplish much as a general deterrent against the crime.

I don't have a dog in this fight but technically, just technically, I'd like to point something out as regards how much culpability Sirius had, and whether what he did could be legally construed as attempted murder.

Sirius didn't actually force Snape to go looking for Lupin's secret. He gave Snape the key to finding out and Snape took the bait. If I was defending Sirius in a trial, I'd go with the defense that Snape acted of his own volition, and that he had no business trying to spy on the Marauders, Lupin especially. Is that fair? Probably not. But legally? I think it's iffier.
