Because Every Mayim Bialik Secret Has To Have This

(Anonymous) 2015-10-03 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
She is not anti-vaxx. She has said that she doesn't vaccinate her kids because they had an extreme reaction in their family, not because she doesn't believe in vaccines. The only thing she has said that could possibly be construed (if seen through hate-goggles) as anti-vaxx is her belief that parents should know what their children are being injected with and make decisions from there. That's not casting aspersions on vaccination, it's encouraging good parenting and frankly, intelligent peopling. Know what is going into your body and make a decision with all the facts in front of you, don't just take the "side" of one movement or the other.

LOL stop.

Stop...saying things that are true? In response to things that are not true?

Or maybe stop giving inaccurate, incomplete information.

She clearly wants to avoid the negative publicity of being anti-vaxx, and who can blame her? Those people are nutjobs. But saying she's not anti-vaxx ignores how complicated the issue is for her. She's affiliated with the Holistic Moms Network, who has prominent anti-vaxx advocates on their advisory board:

http://www.holisticmoms.org/

Initially she said they were a non-vaccinating family:

http://celebritybabies.people.com/2009/06/04/mayim-bialik-talks-attachment-parenting-with-cbb/

But now she claims her kids ARE vaccinated, but didn't say which ones:

https://www.facebook.com/official.mayim.bialik/posts/10155194874840008

What she says about how children get sooooo many vaccinations and we should just be real careful you guys is one of the key talking points of the anti-vaxx movement. They adopted this approach because it's a lot more media-friendly than ranting about mercury and poison injections. Kids get a lot of vaccines because there are quite a few deadly diseases to guard against, it's not some silly conspiracy. There is no medical reason to be "cautious" about the sheer number or to use a delayed vaccination schedule.

hm. I don't consider myself an anti-vaxer, and my kid is vaxed against stuff like Polio and measles, but there are vaccines I don't think are necessary, at least not depending on the situation. Like, I didn't have my daughter vaxed with the meningitis vaccine they are giving here. wanna know why? because I got a little pamphlet from the manufacturer that went MENINGITIS KILLS Type A is totally common in your country, 90% of children who get it are below 1/2 year, and they can TOTALLY DIE, so you need to vaccinate your 2 year old with a vaccine for type B now! CHILDREN DIE!!
Sorry, no. If you try to make me scared of car crashes to sell me bycicle helmets I'm not buying. If there ever is a case of more than one child with meningitis (of that type)in the region where I live I'l totally reconsider and probably get her vaxed (or, who knows, maybe a kid with a compromised immune system joins her daycare or something) but I don't see the need right now. Likewise with hepB. When she's around 14, sure, it's an STD. If I ever go to a counry with poor hygiene? sure. Right now, just because that's how "it's done" according to plan? nope. I don't have to buy everything people try to sell me by playing the scarycard or OMG you're so irresponsible if plain common sense tells me that it's not necessary, and I'm generally more hands off when it comes to medicinal interventions.

SA and I don't believe in vaccines causing aspergers or allergies or subscibe to mercury-paranoia. (Actually, I know someone who got mild anxiety (probably) from ingesting mercury. But they bit a thermometer in half. that's another level (not to mention a different substance) and just a fun fact if you're talking to people who are anti-vax because omgpoison!!)

why did I write all this? maybe to illustrate that you can be sceptical without being camp anti-vax. I find that generally being sceptical in all directions is a pretty good and safe, and stress-free way to live. 'specially as a mom.

Nice try. She is relying on other people vaxxing, and using herd immunity as an excuse to put her kids and other people's kids at risk.

Re: Because Every Mayim Bialik Secret Has To Have This

(Anonymous) 2015-10-03 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a link right above you that has her stating outright that her jids are vaccinated.

Re: Because Every Mayim Bialik Secret Has To Have This

(Anonymous) 2015-10-03 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
The post also says that this was a abrupt 180 degree turn from her previous claim of being a non-vaccinating family, and that she didn't mention WHICH vaccines her kids had received. Given her past complaints about the number of vaccines given to children, it's not unreasonable to question whether or not her kids might still be relying on herd immunity for some common childhood/adult diseases.

Re: Because Every Mayim Bialik Secret Has To Have This

(Anonymous) 2015-10-03 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe she saw the light. Is she now obligated to provide the world with a complete list of every vaccine her children have gotten?

Re: Because Every Mayim Bialik Secret Has To Have This

(Anonymous) 2015-10-03 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. But when someone has gone on the record as being personally anti-vaxx and STILL supports organizations which are anti-vaxx, then claims to have vaccinated her kids only AFTER receiving a bunch of criticism for it, then people are going to question the validity of her claims.

Re: Because Every Mayim Bialik Secret Has To Have This

(Anonymous) 2015-10-03 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Fair enough. However, I will point out that organizations like that are not usually universal in their beliefs. If you want for example, support in your crusade to normalize long-term breastfeeding, sometimes you have to associate with people who also believe crazy shit about vaccines. Who think that you yourself believe crazy shit about vaccines.

I've been part of worker's Unions that have used my dues to support political causes I don't agree with, but that won't make me dump the Union.

Sorry, but nah. I can understand you're in a bind with the union, but Bialik is not under pressure to join the Holistic Moms Network because she needs to keep their job. A more relevant analogy would be like someone who joins the Tea Party because they're a fiscal conservative and claims that pesky racism and bigotry is just one of the necessary evils.

Nice dig at organized labour, anon. How's your health insurance?

DA

I'm pretty sure her comment about unions was in response to the commenter she was responding to, who mentioned negative aspects of belonging to a union:

Dude I think antivax is dangerous bullshit but in no sane world is it as bad as racism and bigotry.

I think you're a bit of a goof, anon.

Re: Because Every Mayim Bialik Secret Has To Have This

(Anonymous) 2015-10-04 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
But the analogy wasn't to suggest that X is equally dangerous to Y. It's making the point that the Tea Party, like the Holistic Moms Network, is an organization with voluntary membership and some controversial viewpoints. Joining either organization and claiming that you HAVE to do it if you want to meet like-minded people who believe in [innocuous viewpoint] but just HAPPEN to get lumped in the same group as people who believe in [controversial viewpoint] is a specious argument.
