Move out. Stay close to help your parents out if you must, but go find your own place (or one with room mates) and get your own cat. It's really not that difficult.

It is, actually. Where I live has an incredibly high cost of living (despite looking like any other American suburb), which is one of the reasons I'm still with my parents. Finding a place anywhere near affordable even with roommates within ten miles is pretty much impossible. And I do have to be near them, not just to help them but for Reasons of my own.

I also live in an area with a high cost of living (one of the highest in Canada). Still managed to find a place with room mates that wasn't out of budget and that allowed cats and that was within 5km of where I needed to be.

But I take it undisclosed reasons have the higher priority, in which case fair enough.

Still, moving out is probably the only way you're going to have a cat that is "your" cat.

No, seriously, at least consider it. What's the worst thing that will happen if you live, say, 20 miles away? I'm asking because some of the things you are saying are coming off as vague, and I can't tell whether you have certain obligations or are just inflating the number of reasons why you are unable to move.

What a thoroughly useless comment. Did it ever occur to you that maybe OP can't move out for, like, medical reasons? She didn't really say what her reasons were, but when someone says they're dependent on their parents Because Reasons it usually means moving out isn't an option.

But that doesn't matter, right? They should just be able to Move Out because It's Really Not That Difficult.

It's interesting how your response to criticism, however deserved, is to deflect it or ignore it. Always.

Do you ever engage in self-reflection at all? Do you ever have a moment where, completely unbidden, you realize, "holy crap I've been a jerk to someone, maybe I should apologize!" And I'm not even referring to this particular situation; I'm speaking in general terms, because I've seen you pull stuff that's way worse than this like horribly bad medical advice, or just treating someone like shit for no reason and acting like you're the victim when they get mad. And you've never, ever apologized for any of it. Do you have any sense of humility? Do you ever stop and say, "Maybe I don't have all the answers? Maybe I don't know everything about this situation I am about to comment on, I probably shouldn't act like I do?"

Which is why I included the option of finding room mates.

It's ...pretty much the only option here honestly, unless you happen to be made of money or want to live in a complete dive.

Yes, but it's not that easy to find good roommates. Moving out could be an option for OP, but it's not oh so easy like you say it is.

It's absolutely easy to find a roommate and move out. But if you're holding out for a *good* roommate, that's on you. Life is a crap shoot.

Of course you don't HAVE to move if you already have a place and you see your only other option as being affordable housing with a potentially (though not guaranteed) shady roomie. But it's kind of silly to complain when you've never taken the risk.
