I know how you feel, but if you're dependent upon your parents, then no, you can't "afford a cat on" your "own money."

If you just want to see kitties, could you volunteer at the shelter instead? At least until you get your own place.

Of course someone could be dependent on their parents and able to afford a cat. Even if OP's reasons aren't medical, getting a cat is feasible for most budgets.

Adoption from a shelter is a one-time expense you can save for the same way a phone or a computer is. Plus, pet food is not really expensive unless you're buying super premium stuff. About $15 can buy enough food for one cat for a month.

Cats also require regular medical care. Flea and heartworm treatment monthly, annual vaccines including a rabies vaccination, registration and licensing, and especially if it's to be an outdoor cat, it should be microchipped.

Also savings in case it gets injured (if it goes outside), the alternative is putting it down.

Anon has indicated they can't live on their own for financial reasons/too costly housing. If you can't support yourself financially, then you can't afford a cat either.

Of course, anon hasn't stated if they pay rent/bills while at home, so I might be making the wrong assumption. But it sounds to me they want to live the way a working teenager does... spend all your earned cash on anything you want because mom and dad are paying all of the household bills/expenses.

Not that it matters, though. The owners of the house have stated their wish.

I think that's a bit different than "spoiled teen lifestyle."

The language used was vague. They said "My folks are getting on in years and I'm helpful to have around at least."

"My folks are getting on in years" = like, what, they're 60? 70? 80? In good health? Poor health? If you're an adult, everyone's folks is getting on in years. It'll happen whether you're there or not. Of course the thought of your parents dying at any age is freaking scary, especially if you aren't there when it happens. It should never be used as a reason to not be independent, to not live your own life.

"I'm helpful to have around at least" = this could mean anything. Maybe mom and dad see free labor. Maybe OP just takes initiative for enough tasks so that they have a "reason" to not move out. Honestly, I'm getting a kind of codependent vibe here.

I never mentioned a spoiled teen lifestyle. A roof over your head is something you're entitled to until you're 18.

I think you are reading a loooooooot into this that was never said.

(It's possible to work and support yourself financially and pay into the household you're in and still have some money left for yourself, but need to stay near someone for, say, medical reasons. That's what I figured anon was talking about.)

No, I'm reading into the things that are unspoken. OP never mentioned "medical reasons" outside of mom having "hormonal caused anxiety" (menopause?), said nothing of their own potential medical condition. They just said parents were getting on in years (which applies to every other adult's living parents).

And I know you can work and support yourself and pay into the household, and still have to take care of someone due to medical reasons. I never said that couldn't happen. I've done it myself. But I've never used that as an excuse to not find housing for myself.

OP didn't use the word "medical", therefore it CAN'T POSSIBLY be medical?
