Re: Problematic Opinion Thread

The only reason tumblr loves Nicki Minaj so much is that she's black.

If it were a white woman collaborating with known domestic abuser Chris Brown (Who abused a WoC, to make matters worse), making videos with nazi imaginery, using the f-word in a song, singing about "raping you n****s", calling women bitches, making transphobic comments, appropiating Asian culture, etc., they'd be dragging her as and calling her a White Feminist. Instead since she's black they keep sucking up to her an ignoring all the fucked up things she's done.

Well, no, I think they like her so much because they like her music and persona. The fact that she's black is necessary (in that it allays the criticisms you outline here) but I don't think it's sufficient.

Honestly, yeah. People shouldn't get passes because they're part of marginalized groups if they do something harmful.

...why does using "the f-word" in a song (odd place to censor that btw) rank up there with all that other stuf?????

Faggot, not fat.

oohhhh. I should have guessed that actually. Yeah that's a much bigger deal.

Though I was thinking "fuck", not "fat".

Obviously I can't speak for all Nicki Minaj fans, but I like her for the same reasons I like Lady Gaga and Ke$ha: fun music + interesting/weird fashion aesthetics.

I don't give a shit about how "problematic" an artist is unless they're on the Bill Cosby/Roman Polanski/Marion Zimmer Bradley level of awful. Nicki Minaj has undoubtedly said and done some stupid shit, but to my knowledge she isn't a murderer or rapist or anything like that so... ~shrug~ IDGAF.

Bill Cosby/Roman Polanski/Marion Zimmer Bradley

One of these things are not like the other ones, one of these things does not belong.

What do you mean? They're all rapists.

OK, sure, I'll bite. Which one?

Two of them are irredeemable monsters, the third is Marion Zimmer Bradley.

TW: rape

I'm going to give you benefit of the doubt and assume you haven't yet heard about the horrific things MZB did. If that's the case, you might want to read these.

(Or if you'd rather not, here's the short version: She molested her daughter and supported her husband's molestation of other people's children.)

You're a better poster than I am, anon.

But we both know what incredibly tiring and depressing path this one's going down.

Could be anon didn't know, I only found out a few months ago thanks to FS. Sorry you had to find out, AYRT.

I wondered if that's where you were going.

I might have said Polanski was different, in that we don't know him to have had a long-term pattern of sexually coercive behaviour. What is it, one known statutory rape case with very dubious consent? That isn't the same as years of established abusive behaviour.

(Edit: Well, there are Charlotte Lewis's accusations, decades after the fact. That may point to a pattern.)

But no, you want to defend the woman's honour. How gallant.

Roman Polanski gave a 13 year old drugs, and when she was unconscious, he anally raped her. Read the case sometime. He and his supporters want people to imagine something much more palatable, but that isn't what happened.

OK, I'm sorry, I wasn't remembering details.

I'm just going to cut to the chase here, instead of playing out the string.

Go fuck yourself.

She's not just Black, she's also Indian (via Guyana).
