Not sure if this is "problematic" per se, but I'm sure someone will take offense to it.

A while ago came across an anthology of erotica written by women that included a story by a fairly well-known and respected black female SFF author. I'd never read anything by this author before but had heard good things about her books, and since I'm a big fan of SFF, I thought I should give her a shot. So I read the story.

I found it so terrible, awkwardly written, and unsexy, it totally put me off reading any more of her work.

But I feel like I shouldn't have this bias, and like it's my own fault for choosing a story in an erotica anthology to be the first thing I read by her. I don't usually read erotica, so maybe what I found off-putting was really just conventions of the genre that I'm not used to, and not any actual flaws in her writing. Maybe I should give this author another chance, because her more "mainstream" SFF work might be nothing like that one short story.

Mostly, I wish I hadn't read that stupid story so I would be able to approach her other work without any pre-conceived notions.

Why do you focus in on the fact that she's black? If you don't like it you don't like it, are you concerned others might think you're racist, or are you concerned you might have an unconscious racial bias?

NA

I think they were listing it because it's a double minority and people would perceive it as doubly offensive. The fact that she was black wasn't focused on any more than the fact that she was a woman - you focused in on that, not OP

Erotica anthology by women. "Women" writing erotica isn't really a minority thing afaik? But anyway, I was curious.

It's more that when you say SFF, women and POC are both "minority" writers. The genre is dominated by ye olde white male group, you know? You get judged enough as non-progressive for disliking a POC author or female author, both at once is a whammy

Fair enough yeah! Anyway, I might've come off as judgey or something?, apologies.

"If you don't like it you don't like it, are you concerned others might think you're racist,"

That's exactly it. I have no illusions about the current state of racial politics in SFF fandom, and I don't want to be lumped in with the Sad/Rabid Puppy types who dismiss authors based on their race and gender regardless of the actual quality of their writing.

Oh yeah that makes sense. Especially in an environment of rabid puppies!
