Not sure if this is "problematic" per se, but I'm sure someone will take offense to it.
(Anonymous) 2015-10-04 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)I found it so terrible, awkwardly written, and unsexy, it totally put me off reading any more of her work.
But I feel like I shouldn't have this bias, and like it's my own fault for choosing a story in an erotica anthology to be the first thing I read by her. I don't usually read erotica, so maybe what I found off-putting was really just conventions of the genre that I'm not used to, and not any actual flaws in her writing. Maybe I should give this author another chance, because her more "mainstream" SFF work might be nothing like that one short story.
Mostly, I wish I hadn't read that stupid story so I would be able to approach her other work without any pre-conceived notions.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-04 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)I think they were listing it because it's a double minority and people would perceive it as doubly offensive. The fact that she was black wasn't focused on any more than the fact that she was a woman - you focused in on that, not OP

That's exactly it. I have no illusions about the current state of racial politics in SFF fandom, and I don't want to be lumped in with the Sad/Rabid Puppy types who dismiss authors based on their race and gender regardless of the actual quality of their writing.
