People overuse the 'tone argument defense'. It's true it's unfair to expect people to be calm when they're discussing matters that personally affect them, specially when they've suffered a lot because of them. But a lot of people act like this gives them a free pass to not even try to not be nasty during arguments. Some people are even self-righteous about their anger, like being angry IN ITSELF makes them more right. That shit isn't cool.

Also, I think there are certain lines that shouldn't be crossed even in the most heated arguments, and telling people to kill themselves or that you wish they'd die is definitely one.

Yep. Not only is it nasty, you just threw away your argument. You now automatically look like the bad guy, no matter how good your point was.

Agreed 100%.

I've also been accused of using the tone argument for saying I don't want to talk to someone who's being hostile. I never said their tone had any impact on the validity of their post, just that I no longer wanted to continue to engage with them at all if they were going to behave that way, which tbh I think is a perfectly reasonable stance.

Agreed. There's something people need to get into their heads, and it's that they're not entitled to people's time. People can leave the debate at any time for any reason.
