Re: Problematic Opinion Thread
(Anonymous) 2015-10-04 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)Anti-HAES is just as shitty as HAES sometimes, I agree with you on that. There's no need to shame fat people. There's no focus on underweight people even if they count as a "size". It's broken in general.
My issue that while "fatties lol" is awful and offensive, convincing people that they're fine ignoring their doctors is beyond awful and dangerous and gets practically into anti-science like anti-vaxxers. There's a large part of HAES that says the system is biased and to disregard medical professionals' advice even if they warn you you're in danger. I don't know why everyone is on board the train to stop anti-vaxxers from spreading their message, but not on board the train to stop this other anti-science thing. It's not about right kinds of fat people or wrong kinds of fat people, it's about listening to doctors and generally proven science.
For me, anyway. I'm sure there are many anti-HAES people who just hate fat people though, and that's the wrong approach imo.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-04 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)Yes, all of this. I don't give a shit if someone wants to be fat; their body, their choice, yadda yadda yadda. But don't fucking spread misinformation that can negatively impact OTHER PEOPLE'S health.
Re: Problematic Opinion Thread
(Anonymous) 2015-10-04 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)Because that's divisive. It doesn't encourage people to think logically and do some real research, it just shows them your contempt and puts people on the defensive, rightly or wrongly. I also think it'd be helpful if people who wanted to combat the bad messages HAES spreads could focus exclusively on the misinformation and maybe not make a point of only targeting the morbidly obese.
