I sympathize, I really do, but I was raised to believe that a person should always have a current US passport if they're eligible. They're incredibly valuable abroad -- IME, you experience so much less hassle than with another country's passport.

Plus, you just don't know if someday you'll need or want to leave the country in a hurry, so you should have it on hand just in case.
