Real ID

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-10-04 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently Oklahoma is among a handful of states that have not met federal Real ID guidelines. Which means in 2016 I may not be able to use my ID as proof to board my airplane for my trip in March. I guess the only solution is to drop $100+ on a passport I may never use. =(

Anyone else in one of the shitty states with this problem?

Unfortunately I just moved to one of these shitty states. :( What a pain in the ass.

I had a problem using my proof of identity card when I was filling out my passport application. It's supposed to function as an equivalent to a license for people who don't drive. They wouldn't even look at it. I guess if you don't drive you don't exist? Idk. What is logic.

I should also point out the cards are issued at the same place and printed with the same holograms. They're the same damn thing.

How did you get it worked out?

My boss and a family friend who had known me for most of my life signed a legal declaration to confirm that I am a person named B Took and they have known me for X number of years. That was the only way they'd accept an application without valid photo ID I think.

I don't know if your system is similar, forms of ID have a point value and you need to bring them enough to get to the total required. I didn't have enough without a license, so that was my only option. There was a list on the application paperwork of what forms of ID they would accept. I got mine at the post office and they took my picture to send along with it, too.

Would just getting a passport card work? Those are cheaper, although you will need to remember that it will be pretty much useless for international travel (except to Canada or Mexico by car).

I sympathize, I really do, but I was raised to believe that a person should always have a current US passport if they're eligible. They're incredibly valuable abroad -- IME, you experience so much less hassle than with another country's passport.

Plus, you just don't know if someday you'll need or want to leave the country in a hurry, so you should have it on hand just in case.

Drop the 100$, get the passport, and use it. See the world, be less American as a result.

I'll just use my money tree to pay for these around the world trips.

I dream of the day where I need a passport to go to Texas, just secede already. Take Florida with you.

As someone else mentioned, look into getting a passport card. If you are not planning flying internationally it should work as a Real ID and would be more than half the cost...
