Check them out like you were about to become their landlord, because (as you probably know) as far as a landlord is concerned, you will not be responsible for just "your half" of the rent; if your roommate doesn't pay her share you are on the hook for the whole of it.

Check whether, in your jurisdiction, you can access court records on line, because if someone has a history of things like eviction for nonpayment of rent, or a record of being repeatedly taken to small claims court for unpaid bills, there's a good chance that they'll do these things again and you will be screwed.

Of course, if this kind of resource is available to you, you should also use it to check out your potential landlord. In my home town, there were a couple of landlords who were incredibly litigious, like it was some kind of hobby with them, and one guy who was notorious for hanging onto tenants' security deposits on flimsy grounds.
