Re: Room/House shares with randoms?
The ones who failed were prior friends, friends of friends and one assigned uni housemate I would not pick myself.
Still got to scope them out beforehand and go through an interview questionnaire type thing but on the whole I've found fandoms preferred.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-05 06:04 am (UTC)(link)Check whether, in your jurisdiction, you can access court records on line, because if someone has a history of things like eviction for nonpayment of rent, or a record of being repeatedly taken to small claims court for unpaid bills, there's a good chance that they'll do these things again and you will be screwed.
Of course, if this kind of resource is available to you, you should also use it to check out your potential landlord. In my home town, there were a couple of landlords who were incredibly litigious, like it was some kind of hobby with them, and one guy who was notorious for hanging onto tenants' security deposits on flimsy grounds.

Also a good thing to have is a probationary period where either of you can choose to break a contract if it isn't working out for you. Generally it means only one of you is on the lease and the other can simply leave if the living situation isn't working out well.
Basically, as long as you're good at writing contracts, that might be the way to go.
