48. Yeah. :/ Such a shame really. I see him as an embodiment of James in many ways. Much more cruel, of course.

50. QFT, people need to get into a more interesting game, christ.

53. It's an AMAZING 32 volume graphic novel. Have you read it? The picture makes one believe you haven't, despite being from the manga. My apologies if you have.

58. Because the game itself is generally considered horrible despite awesome design.

66. Agreed, theres much bigger hacks out there. Ones that cheat the system and create 290+ accounts to favorite their own work, no less! And ban evasion! Oh if only it were easier to prove than just style comparison...

[identity profile] thano.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
50. Kingdom Hearts, yeah, but Subashiki? o.o Have you played it yet? 8D Honest question, I don't know if you live in Japan or something, but I was under the impression that it hasn't been released in America yet...

[identity profile] lashiec.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I played the first and the second, and frankly have never been more underwhelmed. :/ The designs and gameplay were just ehhhh. I'm talking the series as a whole.

[identity profile] thano.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Would it help if I said The World Ends with You wasn't a part of the same series at all?

[identity profile] lashiec.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
No, sadly I've been underwhelmed ever since Nomura "rose to power". Which sucks cause I have played a few of the games he has worked on and it just keeps getting worse. :/

Speaking of that game though...
If I wanted a game that was great at showcasing Shibuya culture, I'd just replay the Jet Set Radio series. Just being honest, but everything Nomura has touched besides the first half of FF8 has left a sour taste in my mouth.

[identity profile] thano.livejournal.com 2008-02-11 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, okay, that's too bad.

Jet Set Radio? I've heard of the name, but that's about it. What's it about?

[identity profile] lashiec.livejournal.com 2008-02-11 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Jet Set Radio (the first game was called Jet Grind Radio here) is a semi-futuristic take on the culture of Shibuya and a few places nearby. You run around on skates tagging graffiti everywhere with loud J-Pop, Indie, and Rock music playing. Sometimes the cops chase you, and other times you're given tasks such as racing or needing to pull off certain tricks.

As you can see from these images, it's pretty obvious where the inspiration for The World Ends with You's graphic style came from.

Blegh...

(Unless theres something about Shibuya culture that cites games based on it are ideal in cartoony cell shading, I'll retract my statement. Either way. Jet Grind Radio was the first to do it.)

[identity profile] thano.livejournal.com 2008-02-11 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Loud music? Sounds like my kind of game. Thanks for the information, I'll have to go check it out!

And about your gripe about similar styles... well, I guess I have to play the game to find out for sure. Even though they're both cell-shaded, from the promotional videos they have of Subarashiki, the two do seem to have been animated differently, somehow. x3 It might be just me, but I do see where you're going about the cell-shading bit, definitely.

Huh? Most of the reviews I've seen have been pretty good.

...and so on. I'd be curious to hear where this "generally considered horrible" comment is coming from.

Re: 58

[identity profile] sabrtooth.livejournal.com 2008-02-11 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Every time I hear mention of Odin Sphere it's always in a positive, "YOU HAVE TO PLAY THIS GAME" kind of light, so I don't know where the idea that's horrible is coming from.

[identity profile] amaiko.livejournal.com 2008-02-11 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Well, there have been a lot of justified complaints about the truly, unforgivably hideous slowdown that occurs in the boss battles against Odette (ugh, it took me SO DAMN LONG to beat her with Gwen. The others were bad too, but Gwen's battle with Odette was definitely the worst) and I think that some people were a little put-off by the fact that you're essentially repeating the same areas/bosses for six rounds, just using different characters each time, plus the difficulty level in some of the areas/boss battles (Cornelius. Titania. I'M LOOKING AT YOU) but other than that? *shrug* I love the plot, I love the characters and the artwork and soundtrack are practically worth the price alone, I think.

Sadly, that is EXACTLY it.

A similar case:
Evolution was a cute RPG, great story, lovable characters...but the repeating, random dungeons with over 40+ floors in some cases...

...yeah it hurt the game beyond repair. :/
