It annoys me too when they say that. In some cases people being mad about what she does about her work reeks of fan entitlement to me.

People are allowed to have feelings about stuff. It's what you do with those feelings that can lead to behaving like an entitled fan.

BINGO.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-05 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
HP fans have always been like that. They did it before the fifth book was even out. JKR said Draco wasn't a sexy woobieful angel, and fangirls flipped. I'm seriously thankful that twitter wasn't around back then.

It's not so much that authors should abandon their own creations, it's just that a certain level of involvement after the fact starts to feel a little weird. Maybe as if they're obsessed with their own work? I mean... JKR's not "Laurell K. Hamilton forgetting her characters aren't real and accidentally buying Christmas presents for them" crazy, but anything that reminds people of wackjob authors can be off putting.

"It's not so much that authors should abandon their own creations, it's just that a certain level of involvement after the fact starts to feel a little weird. Maybe as if they're obsessed with their own work? "

Pretty sure this is just you.

Sometimes they ~enjoy~ it and maybe they don't want to leave something they enjoyed.

I mean it's not as if she hasn't done other things. I don't think there's anything weird or obsessive about it.

Besides a big point people keep forgetting is that fans are asking questions. People are still curious and she's still interested in answering her.

*answering them.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-06 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, the fact that OP made a secret about it strongly suggests it's not just one person, but thanks for playing... I guess.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-06 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Still it's fucking ridiculous that answering fan questions and being involved in a popular franchise after the initial series ended, while there are still people interested in the world and characters, is even reminiscent of being a "whackjob"

There are people who may think that. They're just judgey.

Okay--it's two people then ;) Thanks for playing...I guess.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-06 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, just two entitled fans in the whole of HP, you nailed it. ;)

I feel like you'd have to squint pretty hard to think she's obsessed. I really don't get where that comes from at all.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-05 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, they must hate Tolkien! Then again, he's dead.

. . .

Don't die, Jo!

Whenever this comes up I always end up thinking of Tolkien too.

I wonder if Fandom will be more forgiving of JKR in a few decades, or is it a case that Fandom is so critical that they would lambaste Tolkien if he existed today?

Even at the height of my Harry Potter obsession, I tended to avoid any HP-fandom-heavy spaces like the plague. Stuff like the utterly ridiculous reaction to Rowling still wanting to play in her own sandbox reminds me why I avoided those places.

lol they're just mad she ruined their headcanons

(Anonymous) 2015-10-06 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think she's "clingy" or self-obsessed or anything, but a lot of the material she's released has seemed uninspired, like she's just pulling random stuff out of her ass to keep the cash cow alive. It gets awkward to watch sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-06 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't a lot of it just answering questions on twitter, though?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-06 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

I don't see anything odd in answering questions people send her. I was mostly thinking about Pottermore and about the weird tweets she makes on her own, like wishing her own characters happy birthday, announcing what mundane things they're doing on any given day, tweeting that she's "just heard" where they were sorted, etc... I recall seeing a tweet once about how Neville had just given up red meat for his health, but I'm not sure if that was real or something someone photoshopped as a joke.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-06 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
She doesn't get paid for tweeting and Pottermore is free, so?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-06 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
You don't think it benefits her to keep up interest in the books?

DA

(Anonymous) 2015-10-06 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
You don't think spending probably 10 years writing a novel series and a bunch of tie in material could mean she has a personal attachment to it?

It just has to be some cynical "money" assumption?

You're too cynical.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-06 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
This is pretty much how it makes me feel. It's her universe, it's her right to write whatever she likes about it, but each time I see some new update I think, "... again?"

(Anonymous) 2015-10-06 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
If I made my own universe, and my universe was loved by millions of people, that wouldn't stop me from finetuning that shit 'til I die. Besides, it's not like she's forcing people to update themselves on her work or anything. She's just offering extra information for people who are curious about their favorite characters (who weren't Harry).

She's even said people are open to interpreting her work in any way they want. IIRC someone said they headcanon'd Neville as black and JKR said that was perfectly fine.
