I think this is an very valid way to describe a character's reaction to something, as its something people do in emotional situations. The backlash against the phrase is weird to me, but ymmv I suppose.

I don't think it's inaccurate or clumsy but I think it's probably better to avoid it just because, at this point, it's overused to the point that it is not great writing.

I do agree with this. I don't know if I've used the phrase, but I've definitely used the sentiment.

I already mentioned in another reply, but I didn't mind it until I read it so many times in the space of maybe two hours that it no longer reads as a sentence to me. I'll happily use a similar phrase because it is a valid reaction, but GAHHHHH. Can't deal with it. I didn't know there was backlash though- is it like the hatred of the word moist?

I guess by backlash I mean that I see a lot of people complaining about it. Same with moist. I do not get that grievance at all.
