I cannot read "S/He let out a breath s/he didn't know s/he was holding" without cringing. Some of the most amazing, engrossing stories will have sucked me in and then THAT hits and I lose it. HAAAAAAAAAATE.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-05 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Just gonna agree, and sneak in a mention of:

Oh.

Oh.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-05 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Aaand I'm suddenly turned on. Underneath the laughter.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-05 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
(SA: I just want to be clear that this is supposed to be the way that people write kind of blushing moments of realization, not breathing that is labored due to arousal)

(Like when someone realizes that the subtle implication of someone else's statement is that they want to make out with them, and they're like "Oh. Oh.")

(Anonymous) 2015-10-05 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I've used it once, but it's thankfully not a trope that seems to come up in my fic-reading and made sense with the scene/character.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-06 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, I unashamedly love that one. I'll probably use it until I die.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-06 09:02 am (UTC)(link)
I like that one.

I prefer a variant on that:

Oh.

Oh.

OH!

(Anonymous) 2015-10-05 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
See, that doesn't bother me, but only because I do honestly forget to breathe a lot so I could understand it happening to other people.

For me it's the overabundance use of food as colour descriptors for eyes/hair/skin that annoys me.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-05 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It never used to bother me! Then I read it in, like, three fics BACK TO BACK and a published novel later that day and now I get stabby.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-05 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
She wants to eat me!

(Anonymous) 2015-10-05 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Everybody has A Thing© that bugs them.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-05 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not bad tbh

avoidance of cliche is something to be strived for

She had deep chocolate eyes that smoldered like a charcoal barbecue through the strands of her banana yellow hair. As she licked her cherry red lips with a bubblegum pink tongue, he knew he was in love.

This was forever, like peanut-butter and jelly.

I think this is an very valid way to describe a character's reaction to something, as its something people do in emotional situations. The backlash against the phrase is weird to me, but ymmv I suppose.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-05 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's inaccurate or clumsy but I think it's probably better to avoid it just because, at this point, it's overused to the point that it is not great writing.

I do agree with this. I don't know if I've used the phrase, but I've definitely used the sentiment.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-05 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I already mentioned in another reply, but I didn't mind it until I read it so many times in the space of maybe two hours that it no longer reads as a sentence to me. I'll happily use a similar phrase because it is a valid reaction, but GAHHHHH. Can't deal with it. I didn't know there was backlash though- is it like the hatred of the word moist?

I guess by backlash I mean that I see a lot of people complaining about it. Same with moist. I do not get that grievance at all.

i like the word moist

The only time I've ever held my breath without knowing it was at the physiotherapist when in tremendous pain. However, they did constantly have to remind me to breathe, so it is something that can happen. It's just not an association I'm fond of for some reason.

I have, in reaction to comments I have seen about folks disliking this, taken up rephrasing that into just mentioning breathing out in a gusty or relieved manner, without emphasizing the idea of having been holding it beforehand.
