I understand. You just have a Thing about it.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-05 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel the same way about fic that contains descriptions like "chocolate eyes" or worse, "melting chocolate eyes". Or fics that describe breasts as "globes".

(Anonymous) 2015-10-05 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god that shit is terrible

(Anonymous) 2015-10-05 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
GLOBES? GLOBES? How does that even happen?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-05 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind 'chocolate eyes, because for me that is a legitimate shade of brown, but the other two? Nope. Nope, nope, nope.

ANYTHING described as "chocolate," except actual chocolate, makes me rage. I hate pretty much all food-descriptors of things that are not food, but "chocolate" brings me to a level of hatred that is only approached by "caramel," and since "caramel" is much less common I think "chocolate" will forever hold the prize for Things That Make Me Angry In Written Material OC Or Fic.

'Orbs' for me. One time I got a really insulting review so in a fit of pique I wandered over to that guy's page and read one of his fics. First paragraph: cerulean orbs. Ahahaha no dude your opinion is invalid forever.

'Melting chocolate eyes' is ridiculous, but I've kind of accepted 'chocolate eyes'. It isn't a descriptor that I particularly like, but it doesn't seem to be going away either.

Globes, though?! Hahaha, NO.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-06 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know which makes me cringe more, referring to breasts as "globes" or someone's buttocks as "globes".

I can deal with "chocolate" as a description of brown eyes (though "chocolate orbs" is just...no), but I do agree that it is an overused description.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-05 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
My aunt has this about feet. Squicks are like kinks this way. No harm done.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-05 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I cannot read "S/He let out a breath s/he didn't know s/he was holding" without cringing. Some of the most amazing, engrossing stories will have sucked me in and then THAT hits and I lose it. HAAAAAAAAAATE.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-05 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Just gonna agree, and sneak in a mention of:

Oh.

Oh.

See, that doesn't bother me, but only because I do honestly forget to breathe a lot so I could understand it happening to other people.

For me it's the overabundance use of food as colour descriptors for eyes/hair/skin that annoys me.

I think this is an very valid way to describe a character's reaction to something, as its something people do in emotional situations. The backlash against the phrase is weird to me, but ymmv I suppose.

The only time I've ever held my breath without knowing it was at the physiotherapist when in tremendous pain. However, they did constantly have to remind me to breathe, so it is something that can happen. It's just not an association I'm fond of for some reason.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-05 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I know I've used that terminology in a fic before, so whoops. (It won't stop me though.)

Her hands were so talented, they unscrambled an egg!

(Anonymous) 2015-10-06 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
with all the weird euphemisms and descriptions you can come across in fanfic, 'talented hands' doesn't even register... actually it seems downright sensible

My least favorite these days is characters expertly unbuttoning/unzipping/unlacing their own clothes. Of course they're experts, they've been getting undressed their entire lives!

(Anonymous) 2015-10-06 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Good. Let your fingers talk and get your pretentious derrière out of the fic.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-06 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
I am allergic to any kind of referring to a character by hair. "The fair haired one", "the long haired dude", "the shaved brute", "the girl with long ebony black hair with purple streak and red tips that reached her mid back"... WAAAAH! JUST WRITE THEIR GODDAMN NAME!

It's "clever fingers" for me, rips me out of whatever I'm reading whenever it comes up.

The only way "talented fingers" works for me, is if the Character it describes is a musician/plays piano/guitar.

Nick Knight of Forever Knight? Yes, his fingers would indeed be talented.

Lt. Col. John Sheppard? NOPE. I'm outta here!
