NaNoWriMo

So, I know it says that you can write fanfiction for this but whenever it comes up, everyone talks about their original fiction and I never hear about fanfiction. I'm not interested in writing anything original but I feel weird participating for fanfiction, especially if I want to be participate in the larger NaNoWriMo community.

What's been your experience? How many people write fanfiction for NaNoWriMo?

Traditionally, you were asked to begin a completely new, original novel on November 1st (no fanfic, no non-fiction, nothing you've written a single word on previously). They've sinced loosened that restriction (not that it was ever enforced!), and there should be a "rebels" area for fanfic and the like in the message boards.

I saw your subject and was just about to ask if one could write fanfiction. I am way more about that (i always feel awkward writing my own fiction most of the time). I'm definitely going to do that this year.

I never did, but in the major fandoms, there's usually someone who starts their story about for NaNoWriMo as a way of motivating themselves.

I'm not sure about the NaNoWriMo community itself, but there's always a *flood* of fanfiction in November with people using this to push them to finish things. Or just to get back to writing in general. I think some just ghost the main community and do their own thing.

You definitely wouldn't be alone in writing fanfiction.

There's a genre for fan fiction in the forums and its usually pretty lively. So if you want to adhere to the letter of NaNo, really it just needs to be something you're starting fresh (notes and research beforehand are fine, just story copy). But as has been mentioned, you so won't be alone if you "rebel" and use it to finish things or do a bunch of small things.

Both years I've won?

I wrote fanfiction.

After a seven year streak of not winning.

Writing fanfiction again this year, and hope to make it three years! (Besides, I really need to get back into writing mode...)
