Boy shoots girl over puppy

(Anonymous) 2015-10-06 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
The fuck USA

An 11-year-old boy in Tennessee shot and killed his next door neighbor, an 8-year-old girl, over an argument about a puppy Saturday, police said.

The young killer, a fifth-grade student at White Pine Elementary School, used his father’s 12-gauge shotgun to fire at Maykayla Dyer from inside his home around 7:30 p.m., WBIR reported.

The little girl, a third-grader at the same school, was hit in the chest and died in a hospital, police said.

Neighbors said the senseless shooting was sparked by the girl innocently declining to let the boy play with her dog.

“Wanting to see a puppy, the little girl laughed and told him no...and that was it,” neighbor Chasity Arwood told WBIR.

Jefferson County Sheriff G.W. (Bud) McCoig told the Daily News the shooting is one of the saddest crimes he has handled in 34 years of law enforcement.

"This one has really taken a toll," he said. "It's just an awful thing."

The boy, who has not been identified, was charged with first-degree murder in juvenile court,

He remains in custody, and a judge will decided whether to send the case to adult court.

The boy took the shotgun out of a closet, where it was kept unlocked, McCoig said. His father, who obtained the weapon legally, has not been charged, McCoig said. The only other firearm in the home is a BB gun.

The father told police he had taken the boy out hunting several times, McCoig said.

The young gunman is one of six siblings, who range in age from 8 to 12. The family has not had any "major issues" with the law, McCoig said.

The girl’s shattered mother, Latasha Dyer, told WATE this wasn’t the first time her daughter had trouble with the boy who would be her killer.

“When we first moved to White Pine, the little boy was bullying Maykayla,” she said.

“He was making fun of her, calling her names, just being mean to her. I had to go the principal about him and he quit for a while, and then all of a sudden yesterday he shot her.”

ok a few things

1. if you were a violent asshole I wouldn't let you within a mile of my dogs
2. an 11-year-old should NOT be tried as an adult, wtf
3. his father isn't facing any charges for this? NO responsibility for leaving a loaded gun unlocked where an 11-year-old child can reach it? ?????? wtf

:(

TBH I'd be looking into that family beyond an unlocked gun. Sometimes kids are just royally screwed up even though their parents aren't at fault, but you've gotta wonder.

This for real. Like, I guess the kid could have just been born violent, but I would still be super suspect and want a thorough investigation done.

I agree. An 11 year old deciding to shoot and kill a child over something that minor...that doesn't exactly bode well for his future in terms of violent behavior, I don't think.

And yeah, someone should, at the very least, slap that idiot excuse for a dad upside the head for not having his gun properly locked away.

I wouldn't be terribly surprised, either.

Not the same thing but this case reminded me of one we had here where a guy tortured and killed his ex's puppy. He filmed it and sent it to her. If he hadn't done that, he might've gotten away with it. As it is, he's basically gotten a slap on the wrist.

I vaguely remember that. That is so nauseating.

Wow. That poor mother.

Is it legal to leave shotguns in closets? That seems bizarre to me. Unless you're in constant danger of bears getting into your house and trying to eat you.
There's not even a law about locking guns up if there are minors living in the house?

Everyone who owns a gun here also has to have somewhere to store it that locks.

Yeah, you can pretty much just leave your gun lying around from what I understand. My brother just has his propped against the wall in bedroom and he used to carry it in his truck. (He doesn't have kids.) I mean, in a lot of states you can just carry it around anywhere, so.

So weird. Then again, I guess that's just what everyone is used to. Still not very comforting to know kids have access to loaded guns.

Meanwhile in Australia, snake season has started, and everyone is trying to one-up everyone else on facebook with how many they've seen. I bumped my wheelchair over a flat brown snake on the road a couple of days ago. Poor thing.

Toxic masculinity and misogyny.

this is why I hate the idea that kids are innocent and perfect. kids are just as fucked up as adults.

Yes and no. You've gotta think when an 11-year-old does something like that he's seen an example somewhere.
