I loved that, too. On the one hand, you saw Gerry in every day life where he occasionally talks shit or sounds "old-fashioned". But in his personal life, you saw that he had all these ex-wives who were still fond of him, daughters who loved him, and just a big bunch of women who obviously cared about each other as a highly unconventional but loving extended family, with him in it.

It was even worse in the commercial cut; at least they showed up occasionally in the BBC version, but in the commercial cut (junking twenty odd minutes of running time) Gerry's domestic situation was always the first thing shunted out, followed by Brian and Esther's home life. That survived better because Brian and Esther used to have a lot of case sensitive conversations, Gerry's stuff was pretty much always character focused.
