New Tricks was a cold case squad that employed retired police officers. It was overseen by a serving detective superintendent. The 'joke' was the dinosaurs didn't get the new, computer based policing. Actually, the old dogs did, for the most part learn the new tricks, when it suited their purpose, so an admin/computer support officer became unnecessary. But Clarkie was a likeable character, and the show was a little bit weaker for his absence.
