Crutches Advice?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-07 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm on crutches at the moment, and I am a complete failboat at it. I've only been on them for a day. Any advice for dealing with movement, etc.? Thanks in advance!

Don't try to "walk" them. Stand on good leg. Place both crutches at a comfortable distance ahead of you, pivoted slightly outward (not straight up and down). Support weight on hands, not armpits. Swing body forward, place good leg at a comfortable distance ahead of crutches. Repeat. Stairs are tricky. Make damn sure your crutches are stable and where you want them before you commit to going up or down a step.

Also, Youtube probably has a tutorial or 60,000.

This. Do NOT let your weight rest on your armpits. You'll end up with terrible bruising. T^T

Thirding this.

I fucked my arm sockets up permanently doing that. Not severely, just 20 years on they're still not the same.

Yeah, don't do that.

OP

After your comment I realized that I'm putting undue strain on my armpits, so thank you!

I'm going to check out YouTube right now, so thanks for that tip!

You either put the crutches first and then step or do them at the same time as you step. And you don't need to put full weight on them if you can't (though depending on what you are on them for). When I had tendinitis in my foot, it took me a while to get a hang of it, and I could never put complete weight on them. They just were nice for taking some of the pressure off my foot.

is it possible for you to use just one? I found that easier.

I can't really use one when I need to walk around campus (I teach at a university), but since my apartment is relatively small, I've found that just one is easier to use when I'm walking from the fridge to the sink (for example). Thanks for the trip!

I meant thanks for the TIP, not trip. Freudian slip, I guess (pun intended!)?

Going down stairs, crutches go first. Going up stairs, crutches go last. The same goes for slopes of more than a few degrees.
If you've seen pole vaulting before, that's pretty much what will happen if you get those two mixed up.

I agree with anon above. Try not to take too much weight on your armpits, they're not made for that and they get sore real quick. (assuming you have the regular kind, if they gave you cuff crutches you should wave them around in joy right now because they are awesome).

The height can be adjusted. If you're too hunched down to reach the hand grips, they might be too short. If you're being held up by your armpits like baby simba, they're too tall.

Walking is a matter of doing it and finding what works best for you. I have been on crutches so many times that I tend to move at a jogging pace because it's less tiring to cover big distances if you've got some momentum going. People will be struggling to keep up with you in no time.

Don't try to overdo it, your arms, neck, and shoulders will not thank you. They're not used to what you're asking them to do.

Be safe, my young failboat.

OMG the stairs advice is great! I might print out your comment and tape it to my door before I go out (my apartment has 4-5 steps from my door). I just have regular crutches, but I'm not hunched or baby Simbaing (which made me LOL IRL), so I think I'm ok.

Thanks for your advice! (And this "young failboat" is 30+, so I appreciate it!)

OT, but who's the hottie in your icon?

I think I used my default, so it is Richard Armitage!

Thank you! Believe me, I learned the stair thing the hard way. Going down concrete stairs and suddenly tipping forward into nothing and then landing at the bottom on my face. Not fun.

I am impressed you have made it that many years without needing crutches! You must be a graceful and sensible human being.

Here is a little picture of the stairs rule:

I can't believe I didn't recognize The Armitage! Of course!

I am neither graceful nor sensible, unfortunately. Just lucky!

I'm definitely printing out the diagram and putting it on my door. Thank you again!

No worries!
I hope you have even more good luck with the crutches, then, and a speedy recovery.

He is even more dashing with a bit of facial hair. ;) I don't know why people keep making him shave for roles.

Sorry to hear that, hope you get better soon. Is it one or both feet? I had excruciating pain in both feet for a couple weeks in August, and I couldn't get around AT ALL. Even crutches were basically useless to me because I needed at least one foot on the ground and I couldn't do that. Shit sucked.

It's just one foot, thank goodness. I'm sorry to hear about that! Hope you're better!
