You either put the crutches first and then step or do them at the same time as you step. And you don't need to put full weight on them if you can't (though depending on what you are on them for). When I had tendinitis in my foot, it took me a while to get a hang of it, and I could never put complete weight on them. They just were nice for taking some of the pressure off my foot.

is it possible for you to use just one? I found that easier.

I can't really use one when I need to walk around campus (I teach at a university), but since my apartment is relatively small, I've found that just one is easier to use when I'm walking from the fridge to the sink (for example). Thanks for the trip!
