Is this supposed to be set back when the series was on?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-08 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I don't understand. Everyone is saying "They aren't accouting for people looking older!" and I assumed time was supposed to have passed and everyone IS older. Is this set in the past?

No, everyone is supposed to be older. Styles and tastes change as people age. So while I wish we didn't have scruffy Mulder and Scully hadn't gone blonde...I don't really get the shock and disgust here.

The Mulder and Scully of the series had a well-established and iconic look. A tall(ish), slim brunet man and a short, pale red-head with a bob, both in well-made but slightly boxy suits. That was always their look, right from the beginning, and it became something immediately recognizable, almost definitive. You could do a blurry impressionist painting of them and I'd be like "Hey, that's Mulder and Scully!"

Personally, I loved that iconic quality they had, and I think when a show has the good fortune to create something iconic, the last thing they should do is mess with it for no good reason.

Whereas I would say putting them in clothes that reflect 2015 styles and not early/mid 1990s style IS a good reason to "mess with" their look. Did they take it too far? Yes, but expecting boxy suits and for David Duchovny to, I don't know, suck it in so he looks like your slim memories is absolutely ridiculous.

Not really. It's not like DD got fat. A good timeless suit, a shave, and a bit of tailoring is really all that's called for with him. And it seems like you really don't remember what they looked like in 1998, so I will remind you:

They looked pretty modern. No-nonsense, professional, and only very gentle dated.

That's exactly my reaction, too. This isn't a late-90s period piece...of course they're older.

I think you're reading into this differently then what most people are saying. I see people having two basic problem 1. a shallow part of them doesn't like how the actors have aged (this is not to say they didn't expect them to age, but that they aren't as attracted to them now) and 2. the actors were not styled enough to look like Mulder and Scully, because people have certain expectations about how those characters look.

We know the show should be present day and the characters are intended to be older, I think for some people like OP though it's possible they haven't watched the actors in recent projects so how much they've aged may have been a shock. I've seen them both in projects here and there so them looking older isn't a surprise.

Exactly. You've broken it down really well.

I have also seen DD and GA in other things since, and I actually think DD looks pretty good for 55. But as you say, the styling is all wrong, which is disappointing. And to be completely honest, I'm not sure I even wanted to see them at this point in their lives. Colonization was supposed to have happened almost three years ago, and a part of me always though they would have either died by now, or retired quietly to a cabin on the edge of a lake somewhere. Something like that anyway.

Yes I agree, not sure I will bother watching this.

I really feel she's moved on, but I get that work is work. She's definitely known as the amazing lead in The Fall these days, and for things like her great performance in Great Expectations and Bleak House, plus her stage work. I think a lot who've never seen the XFiles know and love her.

This is exactly how I felt before the revival was confirmed. I heard the rumors about it and thought, "Yeah right. Why would Gillian want to go back? After the last two seasons and the flop that was IWTB, wouldn't it be a step down for her - or at the very least a step back?" I still don't entirely get it. I guess maybe she just wanted to go back on her own terms, now that she's older and has more clout. Plus, she and David do seem like they're become friends over the years, so maybe she just thought it would be a fun project to work on? IDK.
