I think the issues that you raise are real. But I think they can easily be circumvented. It's not hard for me to imagine some really fucking awesome ways to deal with how the actors have aged and I don't think there's anything stopping them from bringing that old X-Files black magic in terms of story and content and tone and style.

Whether or not it will actually be successful, I don't know. I mean, I'm at the point in my life where it's hard for me to believe it actually will be decent. But, hey, you gotta have hope, and it's not like it's going to ruin the existing series if it sucks.

I have no real opinion on the X-Files, but Anderson really looks incredibly different these days. Not just older, but different. Idk if it's the hair colour? But her face looks changed, too.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-07 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
her face looks different but she's still basically amazing soo *shrug*

That is a terribly unflattering picture of Gillian Andersen. Her face is narrower, which is pretty normal for a lot of people as they get older, but something about the angle and her hairstyle really emphasise it here.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-08 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, this. She has her head tilted back a bit, de-emphasizing the point of her chin, and her hairstyle is longer and straighter now, which really emphasizes verticalness in her face.

Yeah, I'm disappointed in the promo photos, too. I'm holding out hope that Duchovny will get a shave and a suit before too far into the series. Sadly, not much to be done for Gillian Anderson, even though I don't think she looks VASTLY different in face. It's just the blonde that doesn't work for me, but a dye job is harder to explain midseries.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-07 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I think all Anderson would need to look like Scully is different hair styling. I don't know why they went with that middle part (and is she wearing a wig?) and she's looked great on some of her more recent projects like Hannibal and the Fall.

Duchovny has looked rough for a while, I normally like older men but he didn't really age well.

I don't really care how they look but I never watched late X-files so I'm wondering if I should watch this.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-07 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
the hair styling choice weirds me out too

i'm picturing her with her older scully hairdo and it would have been better

(Anonymous) 2015-10-07 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
It's always jarring when TV shows or movies don't really account for the aging of their main cast. Star Trek (and TNG) managed to do it fairly well, though.

I never wanted this revival, and I don't hold out any hope that it will be decent, but I definitely agree that DD and GA no longer look the parts, and it drives me crazy.

Mainly because a lot of what's off about them could have easily been corrected, if the people in charge of hair and makeup (plus CC, who is presumably the one calling the shots) had actually made the effort. I mean, DD looks like he's playing himself rather than Mulder, at least in most of the promo shots where he's all scruffy. He should have been clean-shaven and in a nice suit like Mulder of the days of old. Plus, a good makeup person can do a LOT to lift the look of a person's face so it looks higher and tighter (as pretty much every successful female actor over the age of 40 will tell you) but it doesn't look like they've troubled themselves to do that with DD here.

Meanwhile, GA looks fantastic, and I wouldn't really mind that her face has slimmed down quit dramatically with age, if only they had gotten her HAIR RIGHT. Scully's iconic red bob is iconic for a reason. It was so distinctive and became so much a part of her character over the series' run, and it infuriates me that CC and Co. Apparently think it doesn't really matter. To my understanding she's wearing a wig throughout most of the new episodes, meaning that there was literally NOTHING to stop them from working on the wig until it was just right. Yet for some inexplicable reason they settled for this slightly flat, wavy, strawberry blonde thing? Whyyyyy?

I'm not sure I like what they did with Scully's wardrobe, either. It seems like they tried to update it to be more 2015-ish, but I find her look in the promos kind of nondescript. Like, I don't really see why they couldn't have stuck very close to her FTF/S5/S6/S7 look? Maybe slimmed the chunky heels on her pumps a tiny bit, and taken the shoulder pads down to a minimum, but that's about all they would've had to do.

Really, everything about GA and DD's look smacks of the people on the tech/production side of things going "Eh, whatever, we'll just phone it in and see how it goes."

(Anonymous) 2015-10-07 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
This may be shallow but this is why I noped the Hobbit films out of hand. Not only is it basically all Tolkien fanfiction from Peter Jackson, but Elijah Wood is WAY too damn old to play movie!Frodo. I don't care if he's wearing a good wig, he doesn't have soft young features anymore. Dude is 34 and looks it. Not that that's a bad thing! But having continuity with Fellowship of the Ring is a Thing and I fuss over it.

I don't blame you for feeling the way you do, OP.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-08 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Wood is in the first movie for, like, five seconds. He looks fine in it and anyway 99.9% of the multi-hour trilogy is devoted to cgi wargs and improbable elf fights.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-08 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
1) He looks a little skinnier in the face, not necessarily older as in wrinkly.
2) Frodo is barely in the movies at all.

I'd say the most egregious example of aging in the LotR returnees in The Hobbit is Legolas, and going with what others have said about how little Elijah Woods appears, Legolas has a lot bigger role in the latter movies.

Orlando Bloom is also showing his age, his face is a lot more square than it was back in LotR, and any CGI touch-ups they gave him to hide that were not enough to totally hide it.

After seeing Gillian in Hannibal I have to say I honestly think she's more beautiful than ever. She's aged like a fine wine. (This either isn't a great picture of her or the styling is making her look off, but she's a stunning woman.)

I don't think Duchovny looks terrible or anything, but yea, he's certainly aged. *shrugs* People do.

The only reason I'm kind of 'eh' about this is because I haven't had time to rewatch X-Files and unless I do that there's no point in me tuning into the new series yet. (I would like to rewatch it, but...it's so long, and I have so many other things to watch/play/etc.)

(Anonymous) 2015-10-08 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
She's aged like a fine wine.

I agree.

I'm always going to love her XF Season 4 look the best, because I love Scully madly, while I only like and admire Gillian. But I don't think she's any less beautiful now than she was then, and objectively she may be even more beautiful now. Her bone structure is phenomenal and she's got that classy, sharp, sort of aristocratic thing going on now.

In all fairness, botox is a thing, and I'd bet all my savings she's having that done on the regular (along with almost everyone else in the popular film industry). But she only looks so amazing because her underlying features and bone structure are so fab.

Plus she, you know, a good actor who's been landing interesting roles that showcase her strengths. So yeah, good on her. :)

(Psst. I hate to hijack someone else's thread, but I am suddenly feeling terribly awkward about making my own advertising post because I already made one on Monday, but it was late enough that I don't think anyone saw it. This is Haven anon, and the prologue to That Fic That I've Been Working On has been posted: http://archiveofourown.org/works/4942633 Second part should go up later today, and the rest will be coming as fast as my beta and I can edit it.)

Is this supposed to be set back when the series was on?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-08 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I don't understand. Everyone is saying "They aren't accouting for people looking older!" and I assumed time was supposed to have passed and everyone IS older. Is this set in the past?

[personal profile] dancing_clown 2015-10-08 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
No, everyone is supposed to be older. Styles and tastes change as people age. So while I wish we didn't have scruffy Mulder and Scully hadn't gone blonde...I don't really get the shock and disgust here.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-08 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'm halfway with you OP. I think Mulder looks pretty fucking awful and Scully just does not look like Scully anymore, but I'm still looking forward to it. Definitely dampers it though, I'm with you there. It's shallow, but it just doesn't feel like the same characters.

And how about you, OP?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-08 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
WTH? I think they both look great. I look a hell of a lot different, too, considering it's been 22 years since X-Files debuted. Do you look the same somehow, OP?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-08 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
I kinda agree on Anderson, but Duchovny actually looks more Mulder-ish to me. Even as a young man he was a little haggard, scruffy, and haunted. Mulder has aged into the person he was always trying to be, that world weary Night Stalker.

It is the aliens who did it, duh. (Anal probes tend to make people look jowly and long faced.)

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Gillian's lost some weight which is why her face looks thin and long.
