(Psst. I hate to hijack someone else's thread, but I am suddenly feeling terribly awkward about making my own advertising post because I already made one on Monday, but it was late enough that I don't think anyone saw it. This is Haven anon, and the prologue to That Fic That I've Been Working On has been posted: http://archiveofourown.org/works/4942633 Second part should go up later today, and the rest will be coming as fast as my beta and I can edit it.)

Hey Haven anon! I don't think you should feel ashamed to post because someone else might be interested in your fic too! (I think there was another anon who wanted to read it. Maybe two.) Try again when the fic is a bit further along? (Or whenever the urge strikes you, you don't need permission, lol. Maybe make a self-rec thread that other people can contribute to.)

Anyway, I actually saw your post from Monday earlier today and commented, but I figured you wouldn't see the reply; almost no one checks old posts. I thought about making my own post but then decided I would just comment on your fic when I got around to reading it. (I have an AO3 account, so you'll know it's me!)

Thank you for informing me about it! I am def excited, I just haven't had a chance to read it yet. I thought it was going to take a lot longer for you to edit it, but I'm glad it hasn't! Congrats on finally getting the ball rolling!

If you hate to hijack someone's thread, you're in luck because there's no need for you to do it and the choice was 100% voluntary. The fact that you've decided to go for it and promo your own fic (which isn't even X-Files) suggests that actually, you're pretty okay with thread-jacking because it benefits you. Otherwise why not post in the GC?

Are you the OP? Because I don't mind it. Elaminator doesn't mind it. OP hasn't showed up to say they mind it. So what's the big deal?

Just because anon is willing to thread-jack when they feel like it's their best option, doesn't mean they just love doing it. It means they evaluated their other options and those options seemed uncomfortable or unlikely to be fruitful. So they thread-jacked a little, explained themselves, and apologized. Seems fine to me.

I am the OP.

The thing about tread hijacking is that you really, really don't have to do it. Really. Where's the pressing need? It's not like you're elbowing your way in front of a stranger at the subway because you're late for work... which would still be a dick move, by the way. When you hijack a thread, it's a tacit acknowledgement that while you have other options that don't require you to be a jerk, you're going to choose the one that does. Pretending like this is the best option open to you is highly disingenuous.

Perhaps you can explain how posting a self-promotion thread in the General Comments is more "uncomfortable" than hijacking someone else's thread to talk about your own unrelated fanfic? I don't see "unlikely to be fruitful" as a very good excuse. It's likely to be more fruitful for me to take my neighbor's newspaper than pay for my own, but that's not a good reason for me to do it. Even if I apologize and say "Oh, well, you see I really hated to steal your paper like that, but I really had to read the sports section."

What they seemed to say was that they had recently posted a personal thread and would feel uncomfortable doing it again in such short order. Maybe that feeling doesn't make sense to you. Maybe you're not the sort of person who feels obligated to minimize the amount of public time and space you take up. Good for you, that much be really nice! But it seems like anon does feel that obligation. Would I have done the same? I don't know. I just know they kept their intrusion on your thread brief, and they apologetically explained why they were there. It's really not a big deal, and your level of annoyance seems remarkably out of proportion.

Not like this doesn't happen elsewhere, anon. Forgottenjester and I are talking about Dragon Age on a 'trap' thread in GC. I don't see the big deal; sometimes things get off topic.

I'm interested in the fic and though any PM's are welcome, if they don't have an account (or don't want to reveal their account to me) it's easy enough to just reply to a comment letting me know than to go post their own thread and possibly feel like they're 'bugging' the general comm. (Not that they would be doing that, but hey, sometimes I feel uncomfortable making my own threads. I know how anon feels.)
