I got over it, anon :P

Same. It's a good rule.

I feel you.
Once in Nakano Broadway I saw this great figure of Kaworu, a pretty big one, and he looked great and the price was amazing.
He was also shirtless.
I debated for a while, and then realized that "but it's funny! and it was cheap!" wasn't going to adequately explain the presence of it on my shelf.

I have so much fandom stuff thanks to my fiancé, who is much more a collector than me. (If I lived alone I'd have the most spartan apartment. I'm not a decorator at all.) I don't really have to worry about being embarrassed by what we have though, because don't really have friends and we don't have family who comes over.

What if your problem is quantity and not necessarily quality?

What I'm interested in mostly involves buying books, most of them scholarly? Individually they're all quite impressive tomes. But when someone realizes that I have over a dozen books on the same person then it begins to look less cool/scholarly and more like a stalker shrine, I'm a bit afraid to say.

That's my excuse for not mentioning my fandoms to any of my friends/family anyway.

This is one of the reason I'll never own a Free! figurine, even though I really want one.

"Why do you have a half-naked toy on your shelf that is made so we get a good look at his butt?"
"It's Makoto Tachibana, Mom"
"..."
"From my favorite anime?"
". . ."
"...I'll just start packing myself up and be gone by morning, then."

The embarrassment would be too much

This is normal...

My mom was always supportive of me getting fannish stuff; she used to collect comic books back in the day. I never get the idea of being ashamed for liking things and wanting merchandise of said things you like?

I don't either, but I don't begrudge people who do think that way as long as they don't complain about having ~secondhand embarrassment~ from those of us who do openly enjoy our nerdy merch.

That said, I can see how this would be a really useful budgeting tool.

I still buy some stuff, but I just never show anyone. My family love to tease each other about stuff all the time. They mean no harm and probably wouldn't really care, but I'm really sensitive to that stuff.

I've got no shame when it comes to owning fannish stuff(I'm a toy collector) but frankly do it whatever way works best for you.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-09 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I feel the same too.

I don't get the impulse often, but when I do buy things it tends to be t-shirts to sleep in or socks.

For the most part, I've got no shame about the fannish stuff I own-- my family is all geeks, which is probably why, even if we're all geeks for different things.

So, I mean, if there's something out there that I wouldn't be able to share with my family, I guess that's a pretty strong sign not to buy it, haha... but it would take a lot to weird them out when it comes to merchandise (official or fan-made)...

But I do feel where you're coming from, OP, like... when it comes to wall art, I think about who I might invite into my home in future, and whether or not I'd be embarrassed over, say, an anime wallscroll or a cartoon character/video game poster. Some things, I'd say 'well, if a person doesn't think this is cool, I don't need them in my life', and some things I'd say 'eugh nope, can't justify that to a relative/D&D group/potential date!'

I bought a body pillow case from one of my favorite artists of Sephiroth... he's naked and I refuse to have it that side up. If there was a side he had clothes, it would out on display lol

I do understand. I bought one of these last year...

...but felt too shy to put it on the Christmas tree o_0

That rule doesn't work for me because my parents don't find my hobbies embarrassing.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-09 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds like a good rule.

Unfortunately, my own family embarrass easily so I wouldn't get out of bed if I tried the same thing. I did life drawing at art school and this disturbed them so much it was kind of endearing, but it makes me not trust their judgement much ever since.
