Not even Tommy or JCSS?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I assumed OP was using the term "modern" to mean last, idk 20 years or so, thus not pitting it against Tommy. Idk though, maybe they like it better than Tommy, more power to them. (I love both.)

JCSS is so good, I need to watch that again some time soon. Thanks for reminding me lol

I have quite the soft spot for that album too - I was in early highschool when it came out, so it has a lot of nostalgic associations for me.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, same. I love rock opera concept albums and I still think AI is a GREAT example of one. But I don't talk about it irl cause I feel like people will make fun of me for liking Green Day :p

The Drive-By Truckers' Southern Rock Opera will always be my favourite rock opera/concept album. I've been listening to it for nearly ten years and still hasn't worn out its welcome. I learned more about Muscle Shoals, race issues, politics, and Lynyrd Skynyrd listening to that album than I ever imagined I would.

Maybe I should give American Idiot a go. What's its general concept (that I haven't already gleaned from the title)?

Oh, DBT, SO GOOD. That album is amazing all the way through.

I have a hard time ranking music so I can't necessarily say it's in my top ten albums, but I do love American Idiot. It's a damn good album.

Then again, I feel this way about 'Welcome to the Black Parade' too, so I'm sure someone will laugh at me about that. IDC, both albums brought me a lot of joy.

Hello, Trashhand.

Sorry I have nothing productive to say.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, I'm listening to the album right now. It's pretty awesome. I've had people make fun of me for liking The Black Parade so much. "But it's for whiny emo kids!" Who cares? And what makes you so much better than those kids anyway? At least the older I get, the less I give a crap what people think about me.

Like what you like regardless of the year it was made in. Taste in music doesn't make you old. Your ability to get away with social faux pas does.

It's funny, I remember I couldn't really get into Green Day in the '90s when I was younger, but after that album came out, I came to appreciate them and their older songs much more as a result. It was a good album. And a very cathartic one for anyone who took issue with the Bush administration in 2004.

One of my all-time favorite albums came out last decade, too-Muse's Absolution. A thing of pure beauty, that one.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-11 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I LOVE this album. <3

(Anonymous) 2015-10-11 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I like your taste in music, OP--but I had to lol at you referring to yourself as an "old fart." I'm guessing we're close to the same age (I'm 28, was in high school when American Idiot came out). I say we have about another decade before American Idiot becomes "old fart" music.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-11 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I absolutely love this album! I was 27 when it came out and sending my husband to Afghanistan for the third time. That album meant the world. It still does.

Have you seen the staging of it? It's fantastic. Even the band have said some of the arrangements they did for it are better than their own arrangements.

But no, it doesn't make you old.

Saw the stage play/musical and really enjoyed it.

Ah, the soundtrack to my high school life. Green Day, FOB, MCR were my lifeblood as a teenager.

I still get very nostalgic about this album, I'll admit, but it doesn't crack my top 10 :/

(Anonymous) 2015-10-11 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
OP, I am right there with you, but refuse to let it make me feel old. I may have been 29 with 2 kids at home and a husband in Iraq when American Idiot came out but their early albums were released when I was in high school.

Green Day is one of the few bands that my taste in music and my now teenage kids' tastes in music overlaps. I took them to see American Idiot, the Broadway Musical 2 years ago and it was amazing.

Right there with you, babe. Green Day FTW.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-11 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing wrong with that opinion, OP. I think many critics thought the same thing. It's an amazing album (and makes an amazing musical).

(Anonymous) 2015-10-11 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
No, it makes you sound like you were 14 when it was released.

Were you around 14 when you first fell in love with it?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-11 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Asking because a study showed that some of the music we loved around that age sticks with us throughout our lives.
