I haven't seen the other films but apparently Max was never really the focus of the films after the first one it was more of him as a wanderer helping people out.

Yeah, the first one was his story: 2, 3, and Fury Road have all been him walking into somebody else's story, then walking out again, with a somewhat lower local population.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Even the first one he was only a small part of a large ensemble until the end.

Max is a catalyst for others rather than an active character in his own story, that is the best way I can describe him.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
That doesn't seem unreasonable. Just try to remember that, like the Man With No Name, Max is meant to remain something of a mystery (mostly so that writers/directors can mess about with his story and character later if they like).

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
But which is a better character. Max or the Man With No Name.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
both are pillars of shit sculpted into a generic male power fantasy. Give me a character with some fucking emotional depth, please.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Lacking emotional depth is not intrinsically a bad thing. Character study is not the only kind of story.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Nux. He was the only character with emotional depth in the film. Furiosa was a "generic female power fantasty" but of course people like you probably ate that up.

There's a chip on your shoulder and it's big as a boulder.

I think max is a little too damaged to be much of a fantasy. Nobody really wants to see their failures as hallucinations giving them shit.

Explain how, exactly, being captured by Imorton Joe's minions, being used as a blood bag, joining Furiosa's crusade because there's really no other choice and aiding her in becoming the new queen of the oasis is a male power fantasy?

Nah.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Bzzzzzzzzt. Generic Male Power Fantasy would involve fucking at least one or more of the scantily clad ladies, who would fall in love with you (and your mighty gun!) just for being there. Rarely does the GMPF involve a woman who kicks more ass then you without 1) showing her tits and 2) being the one who bones you or who dies before she can bone you.

(AYRT) Hard to say. I'm much fonder of Max, but (especially if you take The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly as a prequel to the Dollars trilogy) I feel like MWNN has better/more consistent characterisation.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought it focused on him way way too much. One of the best scenes of the film was the bit where someone had to walk off into the distance and murder a whole group of people. It was such an awesome scene of understated badass-itude, and of course they give it to the man.

Women can't be bad asses, so we need to shove it down the audiences throat when they do cool stuff! but a man is the default ultimate badass. We don't need to see the carnage to know he's being awesome and badass.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
You have issues. And really picked the wrong movie to whine about.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
3/10 You got a bite, and you talk the talk but you haven't really put the effort in to get anything new to gripe about.

This might make a little bit of sense if violence was actually glorified in the film.

Would you like some cheese with that whine?

Ew. You're gross.

People have wondered why Max's name is in the title ever since the first film.

Welcome to the mad max franchise anon, that's basically how it goes down.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-11 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
put simply, it's all about screen time. the character with the most screen time (there's always going to be one or two with the most screen time) is going to be paired most often with whomever has the second most screen time.

even if A/B and A/C have equally good chemistry, A/B will be the more popular ship if A and B have more screen time (either by themselves or together) than C does.

my main fandom has 5 main characters (none are canonly romantically involved) but only three of those characters are more fully fleshed out as a result of having the most screen time and interactions. but of those three, there's definitely one pairing that gets the most attention and it's the m/m ship because the characters share a lot of screen time together.
