I think of gooseberry jam as being the kind of thing you find at a kitschy gift shop in northern Minnesota along with wild rice and moccasins.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Served on lefse after the Square Dance.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-11 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Square Dance? Not in Minnesota! But it might be served at a community potluck. I've never heard of anyone putting jam on their lefse though, usually is buttered and rolled, often with sugar sprinkled inside. Though that does sound pretty tasty.

Gooseberry jam tastes great (I have some in the refrigerator right now). It's sourly and only a little sweet. The berries themselves are wonderful - it's a very popular garden bush here.
I'm so happy it's fairly popular in Scandinavia :)

Northern Minnesotan here. Can confirm, this is accurate.

Jam in general isn't that difficult to make; it's finding gooseberries that might be tricky.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
World Market and Big Lots both carry gooseberry (and black currant ), jam on s regular basis.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Make sure they are blackcurrants and not black currants though.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
That is an important definition.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, what's the diff?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Black currants are dried grapes, like sultanas. Blackcurrants are berries.

calling jam-making anon

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
...wasn't there an anon on this very community contemplating making some just the other day? Maybe we can facilitate something of a trade.

Where do you live? If it is anywhere other than Australia then I'm sure someone can mail you some. If you are in Australia, how the ever loving fuck are you still alive? Between the Bunyips, Hoop Snakes, Drop Bears and Ceiling Eels you should have been slaughtered before you reached the end of the third word.

Ceiling Eels? That's a new one to me.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
There is always some new horror out of Australia.

Do we have gooseberries in Australia? I thought they were a British thing. We're more mulberries and weirdass honey.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Ceiling eels and weirdass bees. Australia <3

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe they are on the banned list for Australia, one seed could cause nationwide were-dingo outbreaks and Kaiju-toads or something.

If you're in the UK, Sainsburys and Tesco's sometimes hide gooseberry on the bottom shelf of the jam rack.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I love gooseberry jam. IKEA sell gooseberry jam, but might not carry it in all the countries.

Gooseberry jam is very nice, though I'm miffed that the varieties I've tasted basically consist of gooseberry juice and huge ass separate gooseberries. I like my jam paste-like.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-11 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe you should just grow some gooseberries of your own. Make sure it's legal where you are.

It would be so cool if you managed to grow your own gooseberries and make some and tell us about it!
