He voices a character in Tsubasa who, in the manga, is considered by the majority of fandom to be in love with another man. It's fairly close to canon, arguably, but he's very rude to the people who ship this pairing. He keeps speaking of the character as though he's an authority on him, telling us that "you're wrong" and "he likes girls like me." Even though he has not read the source material, which goes way beyond the anime.

Which is fine - it's not the most professional but he's not entitled to like the pairing. He's not obligated to read the manga, either.

But when he tells the fandom "I've spoken to Clamp and they told me he's not gay"? Even though Clamp hasn't been to America since before he was cast? Even though they don't speak English, are insanely busy, have publically said that they hate the anime and want nothing to do with it? Even though the woman who writes it won't even tell the OTHER MEMBERS OF CLAMP what happens in the future?

Sorry. He lost my respect for that one. It's on YouTube so he definitely said it. I just want to enjoy my ship without him constantly telling me I'm wrong and he's right.

I'm kind of glad I'm out of the shot, or I probably would've been harassed more than I was after the con. I wanted to stick up for the CLAMP fans out there who were unhappy with both his interpretation of Fai and his attitude on the subject.

I couldn't hear clearly but did you ask him about the whole sexual relationship =/= romantic relationship? 'cause it sounds like you did, and if so, his answer was complete BS and barely answered the question at all.

Yeah, I tried to, but he kept talking over me and trying desperately to regain control of the audience/situation, so I couldn't really get my point across. D:

Vic: ...Now, let me explain something real quick. There is no question at all that Fai—if you were to assign roles... if you were to take the four - Sakura, Syaoran, Kurogane and... Fai. If you were to take those four and call them a family, Fai’s the mom. [audience laughs] Clearly. Right? Fai is the—the—the—the—the, uh, the nurturer, and the softer one, and the, “You did really good out there today” [in his Fai voice]... and Kurogane is clearly the dad. Would you disagree?

Me: I think I would, give that—I’m sorry, but I’ve read farther in the manga, and it’s pretty much clear at this point that they’re relatively along the lines of soulmates. [audience giggles]

Vic: ...Okay? Does that mean they’re screwing each other? [audience screaming, laughing] I’m being honest, right? We-we’re big people here [what?]; that’s pretty much the question. [he’s talking over me here] Is—are they—are they sexually involved, and every indication I’ve been given is that they are not.

Me: Homosexuality does not always mean they are “screwing.”

Vic: Well, but you know what, that’s what people in western culture think of. [LOL WHAT]

Me: I think that’s offensive. [with regards to his “screwing” comment]

Vic: Well, I-I agree, it would be offensive. But that’s what a lot of people think. I mean, unfor—you know what? I’m not really sure why it is, but so many people... tend to want to bring a sexual, uh, quality into a lot of the character relationships and stuff, and I don’t know—and I don’t think it’s a Japanese thing at all, I think it’s very much a—a western culture thing. [audience: “NEXT QUESTION”] So I don’t think that’s the case between them. I get that a l—I get that question a lot though, and I don’t really think that’s the case—a-and again, let me say this: manga... anime... two different things. Everybody knows that a lot of times, the anime varies... greatly from the manga, right? Well, I’m not making... manga. I’m just doing whatever I’m told to do and I’m—as I’m directed, and—and the people that make the anime—t-that dub the anime go into great detail to try to figure out... what the original people want for the anime. So they try to be as true to the anime as possible. And when the manga and the anime disagree... we go with the anime, because that’s, you know, saying, that’s what we—that’s all we—that’s what we’re making. We’re not making manga. So I—[video ends here]


So basically, Fai is the motherly, "nurturing" character, and slash/sexualizing relationships is totally a western concept. Huh.

And as nice as he could be, he shouldn't be as dogmatic as some people seem to suggest that he is. I wonder about these claims of Christianity getting in the way of homosexuality. It's possible to be Christian and quite accepting of homosexuality, so there's already a bit of a faulty thought process surrounding him.
