On the whole 'heartbreak over him saying the OTP isn't canon' issue, it has less to do with his dislike of yaoi and denial of canon as opposed to the way he goes around expressing. He's allowed to dislike it all he wants. He's allowed to have his opinion on the canonity of it. But the problem is, he gets up when asked questions about this and generally says things, "Everyone can have a different opinion and like what you like, and I respect that, and so you need to respect in return, and honestly, I don't like it."

And it would be fine if he left it at that. But he never does.
And there's a big different between coming out and saying he personally doesn't like something and respects that other people do and showing said respect and going on a tangent about how slash(yaoi) is like ruining a work of art. That's disrespectful, and not acceptable, especially if he's going to turn around and ask for respect in return.

There's really no polite, live-and-let-live way to tell someone that you don't like yaoi and try to explain why.
