Honestly, people who pester others to buy stuff in general are annoying, and I don't blame you for being irritated. It's like having a salesman constantly knocking on your door. Selling a good or service is perfectly legit; trying to shove it down others' throats isn't, even if you really need the money (and it won't really help you get customers, either).

Unrelated to the above: the art used in this secret is gorgeous!

Exactly. Even at where I work, if we have deals or coupons or whatever that we offer customers who are actually IN the store and browsing and shopping, and I mention those special offers and sales to the customers, and they say no thanks, they're not interested...then I just drop it. I'm not going to continue hassling and pleading with them and leave them feeling all irritated and annoyed.

I don't understand why some businesses force their cashiers to try to upsell membership cards or other things even when people don't seem to be interested - it's annoying and it doesn't work. Who makes those policies?

Some higher up, usually. It often seems those decisions come from people who sit in offices all day and don't have to deal with the customers on a daily basis the way the retail workers do. My mom worked at a store where the higher ups kept tabs on how often this one store card they offered to customers was given out, and my mom kept getting hounded for it because she wasn't pushy about it the way she was supposed to be.

She actually often did just fine with giving out the cards-there were many customers who wanted them that accepted them. But she refused to keep pressing the people who said they weren't interested (in the area that store was in, many people already had enough cards for this and that they were trying to keep track of, and they didn't want another one. And some customers get wary that they may have to pay some hidden fee or there's some sort of catch, too).

And the higher ups just couldn't grasp that. It drove her nuts.

I wonder if higher-ups ever ask for feedback.

I honestly don't think they bother because they don't think they need to.

It would make so much more sense for them to say "here, give away these cards" and leave it up to store managers to figure out how. Maybe it's a control thing. Maybe they don't want to admit store managers are (or at least should be) capable, intelligent people. Maybe they're just dumbasses.

they don't see customers as customers. all those higher ups sees customers as are numbers and walking money.

Like spa workers who, in the middle of what is supposed to be a relaxing facial or whatever, try to upsell. WORSE try to upsell you by insulting you. Bliss did that to me and my roommate--she had bought me a facial for my birthday and treated herself to one as well--the two facialists dragged us through most of the procedure. This wouldn't have worked for me in any case, but it was especially bad timing since literally 3 works before I'd gotten one at a Hilton spa in Arizona where the facialist raved about how good my skin was. So the whole time the Bliss aesthetician was saying how dry my face was, how I needed this and that, I'm thinking sardonically "wow, must've really degenerated quite a bit in just 3 weeks!"
