I believe in the theory that, while Slytherin handpicked people of pure blood or known wizard blood himself, the Sorting Hat eventually stopped taking blood into account while sorting. Meaning there are muggleborn Slytherins.

I mean, Harry was a half-blood and the Hat wanted to Sort him into Slytherin, so yeah, I can see it. I think it had more to do with overall attitudes than pure blood. I can easily see the Hat being magically programmed to pick personality traits despite Salazar Slytherin's preferences, since he didn't get his way about a pureblood-only school.

Yeah. I mean I've encountered people who were pretty literalist about it. "Slytherin picked purebloods , so you can't have a muggleborn SLytherin."

I wasn't sure how unpopular or popular a view it was overall but it was the only one I could think of that fit the bill so *shrug*.

...Snape is half-blood too. VOLDEMORT is half-blood. that doesn't make any sense!

Voldemort was a half-blood everyone thought was a muggleborn to start with.

Well technically I think the only thing they were discounting was the idea of a muggleborn Slytherin. They believed that being Slytherin meant you had to have some wizard blood, so halfbloods would count.

Only as bad OCs, but you knew that already.

Just curious what makes you think a muggleborn Slytherin can only be a "bad OC"? Even Pottermore has comments suggesting that not every Slytherin is related to some old wizard name.

Is there anything written in canon other than Slytherin's personal preferences that all the Slytherins are pure or half blood?

Agreed. If purebloods are really as insular as canon makes them out to be, then the only way to keep Slytherin from dying out totally would be to let in muggleborns and other non-purebloods.

Exactly.

Also seeing as the hat seems to have a mind and will of its own, and throughout the books frequently talks about how "i wish I didn't have to divide you" and "you should all unite', I can certainly imagine that it wouldn't go on keeping Slytherin only pureblood. It had the mind and personality of all four founders.

Is this really such an unpopular theory in the fandom? It makes a lot of sense to me.

I wasn't sure. It was in one circle I found. I couldn't think of any other headcanons that remotely fit.

I mean I'm not disputing including it in this thread XD I was just surprised, because it makes sense to me, but at the same time I could totally buy the fandom going off on some Slyterins=purebloods 5eva thing.

Yeah true.

Re: Unpopular/Controversial Headcanons

It never occured to me that the hat might take their blood status into account. I mean, Snape and Riddle are half-bloods and they were in Slytherin and the hat wanted to place Harry in Slytherin as well. So it couldn't have been only pure-bloods that were placed there. Do we know what Slytherin's thoughts on half-bloods were? I was under the impression that he only accepted pure bloods.

Re: Unpopular/Controversial Headcanons

[personal profile] dani_phantasma 2015-10-11 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I dunno either. I cannot really see the hat going "well you have the right traits but you're muggle born....sorry about that you can just go to...uh Gryffindor...I guess".

Yeah clearly if there are half bloods then there are muggleborns. The muggleborns are probably just smart enough to look at types like Draco and Pansy and go "yep not telling them that".

Though, I imagine they would partially be kept safe by the fact that some puiurebloods might be under the impression that Slytherin only has purebloods. That honestly seems like the kind of thing that bigots would believe.
