Unpopular/Controversial Headcanons

Sort of like unpopular opinions...but with headcanons and fan theories.

I don't actually think Holmes and Watson retired to Sussex together. IMO canon!H&W have a communication problem which prevents them from explaining to each other how necessary their friendship actually is to them. So they end up being apart.

I don't necessarily see them retiring together but I'd like to think they still keep in touch. Just because... Well, because I like to think it.

After the end of the movie, the Alliance put real effort into not just hunting down and killing every single one of the Serenity's crew, but they also refined PAX properly and used it to properly pacify and settle the frontier planets so that all those soldiers killed by Mal dragging the reivers into battle, and all those original colonists on Miranda did not "die in vain", because we all know that governments hate being embarrassed and are well versed into spinning deaths and tragedies into something that suits their purpose. Mal's aiming to misbehave was the last straw that doomed all he ever fought for. Maybe they kept Mal himself in some dingy, windowless, sub-surface level cell until he died of old age so they could say they did take the sky from him.

There is your headcanon for Firefly. Based on solid real-world actions of our own government and other regimes in response to terrorist acts and embarrassing leaks. There is no way that the alliance called it damage-done and let Mal skip town or wasted the PAX research. And the Operative showed just how easy it was to push over the outer colonies when they really had to.

Knowing Joss Whedon, that's probably actually not far from what he originally intended for the series, although presumably Mal would've won in the end and the killing off of everyone would've been more gradual. But they definitely did not go gently into the night after that, which is, to be honest, why I'm glad the series was cancelled.

(Although two seasons would've been nice.)

You're a GoT fan, aren't you?

If not you should definitely look into writing fic for GoT, because this is exactly the sort of GRIMDARK anti-fun/hope/optimism/idealism/wish-fulfillment crap that fandom creams itself over.

I think you're vastly overestimating the Alliance's commitment to PAX. It was a failed experiment that they tried very hard to cover up, not a defining mission of the political class.

If The Operative (as true a believer as ever believed) was willing to change his mind about his masters' policy direction, presumably the party in power had plenty of politicians who wanted anything like PAX discontinued, gone, dead, and buried.

Steven Universe

(Anonymous) 2015-10-11 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I do think Pearl is gay, but not in the same way as most of the fandom who headcanons her that way. I think she's gay by definition of "only being attracted to your own gender" because I can't see her being attracted to anyone who isn't a gem, and gems are all the same gender/lack thereof.

(I hate the popular "she likes WOMEN and doesn't like MEN" way of putting it among her stans. She isn't you.)

Additionally, I think if hypothetically there was a gem who chose a human male form instead of a female one, that wouldn't lessen the possibility of her being attracted to him.

To keep the SU in one thread: from what we've seen so far, I can't see Pearl having a healthy, equal relationship with Rose. If it had worked out, Pearl would have a better sense of self-worth and wouldn't put Rose on so high of a pedestal.

Definitely an unpopular fan theory: headcanons are bullshit. They are symptomatic of fans' inability to identify with anything that does not reflect themselves, an idealised version of themselves, or their own personal or community values.

This includes erasing the actual content of canon in an attempt to bend the reality to themselves.

I believe in the theory that, while Slytherin handpicked people of pure blood or known wizard blood himself, the Sorting Hat eventually stopped taking blood into account while sorting. Meaning there are muggleborn Slytherins.

Buffy never actually loved any of her canon love interests, at least not in the EPIC TRUE LOVE DESTINED SOULMATES FOREVA way that shippers would like to think.

Buffy/Angel was more of an obsession than love, Riley was the post-Angel rebound guy (she definitely liked him a lot, but I wouldn't say she loved him), and Buffy/Spike was totally one-sided (Spike loved Buffy, but Buffy was using him for sex and emotional catharsis).

I don't think she could ever be truly happy with any of them. She seems to be at her happiest with Riley, but that falls apart pretty quickly due to Riley's issues.

TL;DR: Buffy's probably better off single.

I don't think that Cloud actually developed that deep of a friendship with the people on his 'team'. I think that they became comrades-in-arms and after going through what they went through together, they had a bond of trust/reliance that was extremely powerful, but I think that's vastly different from the experience of befriending somebody because you enjoy their companionship.
I don't think Cloud manages to ever have that type of friendship, because his childhood/young adulthood was destroyed by the experimenting and his fractured personality, and later on he basically falls back on his party members as kind of default 'friends' without actually undergoing the experience of befriending somebody for companionship.
His only actual friend in that sense was Zack, and Zack's dead.

I headcanon some of the Hetalia characters as straight, in a fandom that is happy to accept that Everyone is Not Straight. I would be more than happy if that were canon; still, I just see some characters as straight for one reason or another.

Light Yagami is gay. I don't mean that with any shipping motivation whatsoever (though I do think there's some intentional subtext with L). I think Light was deliberately written as gay, and that was one thing that led to his sense of isolation and disconnect with society even before the Death Note was ever dropped.

Sort of controversial because the pro-LGBT representation crowd hardly wants a serial killer among their ranks, but since I think Light is one of the most interesting anime characters of all time, I don't really care, it makes him even more interesting to me.

Tales of the Abyss

(Anonymous) 2015-10-12 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
1.) I don't think Dist is gay. I don't think his feelings for Jade are either sexual or romantic (just intensely, intensely platonic-- like a BEST FRIENDS FOREVER DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME OTHERWISE I HATE YOU sort of thing). Honestly, I peg him as ace/aro entirely, he's just way, waaaaay too fucked in the head for romance or sexuality.

2.) I don't think that Mr. Ending is in any part Asch. He's entirely Luke, having merely reabsorbed Asch's fonons. It'd be like saying that someone that got a blood transfusion is now partially the donor.

I can only read Phyne Fisher as straight. 100% hetro. Not into women at all.
Look, she's thirty, well-travelled, sexually experienced, adventurous, and has canonically had multiple opportunities to get it on with interested and attractive women. But not once in twenty novels (and one short story collection) has she expressed anything but shrugging disinterest in having sex with other women.

The last time I tried saying this, I was told that I was suffering from "internallised biphobia".
