Re: Unpopular/Controversial Headcanons

I don't think that Cloud actually developed that deep of a friendship with the people on his 'team'. I think that they became comrades-in-arms and after going through what they went through together, they had a bond of trust/reliance that was extremely powerful, but I think that's vastly different from the experience of befriending somebody because you enjoy their companionship.
I don't think Cloud manages to ever have that type of friendship, because his childhood/young adulthood was destroyed by the experimenting and his fractured personality, and later on he basically falls back on his party members as kind of default 'friends' without actually undergoing the experience of befriending somebody for companionship.
His only actual friend in that sense was Zack, and Zack's dead.

I can get behind that to some extent, except for the last bit. I don't really see much original game material to suggest Cloud and Zack were really friends at all, or very close, though Zack was a friendly guy and Cloud desperately wanted to be just like him (enough to convince himself that he was him post-experimentation, of course). I think Zack felt some responsibility toward Cloud and since Shinra fucked him over, maybe wanted a comrade after they escaped, but I cannot imagine Cloud before that really being close with Zack beyond admiring from a distance, he was too isolated and shy of a person.

Bonus FFVII controversial opinion!

I don't think Zack and Aeris ever had a serious relationship. Aeris is a huge flirt around Cloud, and when she talks about Zack she tends to ask Cloud immediately if he's jealous, or try to be cute and flirtatious with Cloud, which doesn't really imply she's harboring any lasting feelings for Zack at all. Even after she finds out Zack is dead, she'll immediately flirt with Cloud and ask if he's jealous. I suppose everyone's first relationship, especially as a teenager, always has a special place in one's heart, but I don't get why people OTP Aeris and Zack, she's so clearly long over him.

Okay so to be super-honest I actually agree with you - I don't think that Cloud and Zack were actually such great friends, but I thought that was TOO unpopular to voice XD
I definitely agree with your take, that there was responsibility and hero-worship there, but not Cloud having a very deep friendship.
In a way I actually like it better, the idea that Zack's thrown into this horrible situation with a kid he doesn't know, but he's willing to fight so hard for him anyway. It's pretty amazing.

Part of the OTP thing with Aeris and Zack can be based on how it's framed at the end of AC, though. They are kinda together, and I guess some of it is just shipping. I don't mind shipping Zack and Aeris, but I agree with you that at least in canon, Aeris does not seem /overly/ heartbroken, at least not true-love-gone type heartbreak.

That is incredibly sad, but basing off of his physical, verbal and emotional distance in Advent Children, sounds very accurate. I agree.

Right? I mean for me that's part of the biggest tragedy about his character, and how badly he was stunted. I definitely /want/ to see him developing more serious actual friendships, but canon doesn't really let him go in that direction.
Some fics are very good for that, though.
