Re: Unpopular/Controversial Headcanons

Buffy never actually loved any of her canon love interests, at least not in the EPIC TRUE LOVE DESTINED SOULMATES FOREVA way that shippers would like to think.

Buffy/Angel was more of an obsession than love, Riley was the post-Angel rebound guy (she definitely liked him a lot, but I wouldn't say she loved him), and Buffy/Spike was totally one-sided (Spike loved Buffy, but Buffy was using him for sex and emotional catharsis).

I don't think she could ever be truly happy with any of them. She seems to be at her happiest with Riley, but that falls apart pretty quickly due to Riley's issues.

TL;DR: Buffy's probably better off single.

I vaguely recall she was together with Xander at one point, but I didn't get the impression they felt the same way about each other. And I've heard that in the comics, she sleeps with another slayer who's in love with her, even though she doesn't love her back, because she wants to not feel alone. Buffy has issues.

AYRT

I gave up on the comics before Buffy/Xander happened, but that does sound consistent with how they've both been characterized in the show. (Which is ironic, considering how terrible the comics are at keeping to the feel of the show.)

As for Buffy/Satsu... yeah, that definitely was 100% one-sided. Poor Satsu.

I kind of agree with you. Riley probably had the most potential, but that was also ruined by the way the storyline played out. It would have been interesting to see her actually in love.

Huh.

I believe Buffy loved Angel, but I don't believe it was some kind of "destined soulmates forever" thing - just that it was a true, deep love as long as it lasted, and that they probably still love each other in some capacity, though I dob't think they still long to be together or anything like that.

I also believe Buffy loved Spike, in the end, but I don't think she loved him while they were together, and once she did love him, I don't think she loved him in a way that involved wanting to be with him sexually. Sex and love seemed like quite separate things in their relationship - like they had all the sex they were going to have back when she hated him, and then when she loved him they were kind of done with the sex part.

As for Riley...I think Buffy wanted to love him, because she wanted the kind of normalcy and wholesomeness that loving someone like Riley would signify. She wanted a life in the light, and a lover who could be there with her in the light. And I think she liked Riley. But I don't think she could really love him.

Well, you're not wrong. I remember the episode when she went to college, felt out of place, met a cute guy... and then said cute guy got eaten by a monster. I have never been so butthurt in my life over a character in Buffy dying.

I think at least Buffy->Angel was love, but then it all went to hell after Angel went Angelus and wanted to destroy the world and DRAMA! DRAMA EVERYWHERE! So they fell apart. Agreed with Spike Buffy. Now we need canon Spike/Angel and the cycle will be completed.

tl;dr I agree, she's better off single.
