I would love to be a RICH hobbit like Bilbo or Frodo, who don't seem to have to do much of anything. Even before Bilbo's adventure and subsequent treasure acquisition, he seemed to be very well off and could afford a leisurely hobbit lifestyle.

That's something that comes to mind when people talk about how great hobbit life is, that they are actually very practical working folk who have to maintain gardens and farms and raise animals. Oh the books talk up how laidback they are, but if they're a work society, they do work.

The most common reasoning I have seen in fanfic for Bilbo's seemingly leisurely life is that he probably owns quite a bit of land that is leased out, so he has a regular income coming in from that.
