idk about the actual house, but The Shire would basically be the best neighborhood. It's so peaceful and beautiful and idyllic.

My only concern is if I'd have relatives like the Sackville-Bagginses.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-11 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Doesn't everyone have relatives like the Sackville-Bagginses?

Or is that just me...

Lobelia is awesome.

There are villages with cave-houses if you like them so much.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-11 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Like Coober-Pedy. Practical in the heat.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-11 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
You'd probably save money on heating and cooling and be safer in case of tornadoes (but probably not earthquakes). Plus, I love any culture that cares about making everyday things beautiful.

I know Tolkien explicitly says Hobbit holes aren't damp and dirty and gross, but I can't help but think of how most of my friends growing up lived in houses with finished or semi-finished basements and it put me off of the idea of living below ground level forever. Even looking past the fake wood paneling, ugly carpet, uglier furniture, and disorganized overflow storage, those spaces always felt vaguely dank and icky. The unfinushed basemeny in our house also felt vaguely dank and icky, but no one expected me to hang out down there and watch tv.

They're sort of more built into the side of hills though, rather than built down into the ground. Depending on soil composition and rainfall, they may actually have fairly good drainage around them to combat damp. Similar to a house with a green roof, if you've seen pictures of those.

Living in a house with almost no windows makes you crazy after a little while, I can say from experience.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-12 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Clearly you've never been in a nice basement, then.

As for fake wood paneling and ugly carpet, that probably describes most of my friends' above-ground houses growing up.

Tolkien said that only the richest and poorest hobbits had smials (hobbit holes). The poorest were damp and dirty, while the rich ones (like Bag End) probably had well-laid flooring, wall panels extra.

The real question is whether you have the funds to get quality floors and wall paneling instead of ugly stuff.

If I could have a Hobbit house with modern amenities as well I'd so be there, they just look so cozy to live in.

This is an actual house that I used to live near:

PC200262 hobbit2

I agree that Hobbits seem to have a pretty great life in the Shire!

(Anonymous) 2015-10-11 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
So pretty.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-11 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Those chairs though...

I want to live there. Or The Shire. Whichever, both are acceptable.

(The thing is if I were a Hobbit I could eat six meals a day and no one would look at me funny for it, so being a Hobbit still has advantages.)

Nope. A whole world of nope. Underground house? Holy claustrophobic shit, Batman. Nope, nope, nope. Also, eurgh.

I would love to be a RICH hobbit like Bilbo or Frodo, who don't seem to have to do much of anything. Even before Bilbo's adventure and subsequent treasure acquisition, he seemed to be very well off and could afford a leisurely hobbit lifestyle.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-11 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Fuck it, I'll just be rich. I don't need to be a hobbit. Leisurely lifestyle FTW.

That's something that comes to mind when people talk about how great hobbit life is, that they are actually very practical working folk who have to maintain gardens and farms and raise animals. Oh the books talk up how laidback they are, but if they're a work society, they do work.

The most common reasoning I have seen in fanfic for Bilbo's seemingly leisurely life is that he probably owns quite a bit of land that is leased out, so he has a regular income coming in from that.

You can pretend! Check out Lord of the Rings Online, which is a free MMO. You can play a Hobbit character and buy yourself a hole of your very own. You have to reach level 15 first to do so, but that's only a few hours of exploring the Shire. You get to decorate it to your specifications, too.
